Handlebars....might seem simple but have you ever wondered where your hand should be when you ride?
The handlebars of Spinner bikes are designed to provide comfort, efficiency and stability. It’s important to use correct hand positions to ensure safety and proper alignment in the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders and spine. There are four safe positions available to us when we ride and the positions can be changed throughout your ride to support your movement on the bike.
HAND POSITION #1: Rest hands in the center of the handlebars with weight on the outer edge of the hands to maintain circulation to wrists and palms. Hands can almost be in a prayer position while elbows maintain a slight bend, shoulders relaxed and dropped away from ears and eyes are forward.
Used for seated flats when intensity is easy to moderate such as during warm-up, recovery after intervals, endurance drills and cool down.
HAND POSITION #2: Place palms over handlebars with thumbs resting on the top or inside of the curve. Fingers point down, knuckles point forward and wrists maintain a neutral position. Elbows maintain a slight bend, shoulders relaxed and dropped away from ears and eyes are forward.
Used for seated and standing flats, seated climbs, running on a hill, jumps on a flat, jumps on a hill, sprints on a flat and sprints on a hill. This position can also be used for warm up, recovery and cool down. We spend most of our riding time here! This position opens up the chest for optimal breathing and offers stability.
HAND POSITION 2.5: Lightly wrap fingers and thumbs toward the inside of the handlebars and maintain neutral wrist alignment. Elbows maintain a slight bend, shoulders relaxed and dropped away from ears and eyes are forward.
Used for all of the same movements used in HAND POSITION 2.
HAND POSITION #3: From a standing position, wrap palms and fingers around the ends of the handlebars with knuckles facing out. Grip should be light and relaxed even though resistance is increased to a heavy position to simulate a climb.
Used for standing climbs, during the standing portion of jumps on a hill, sprints on a flat and sprints on a hill.
Happy riding!
