THE GAME BELONGS TO THE PLAYERS ⚽

As coaches, we prepare, teach, correct, and create different scenarios during the week.
But once the whistle blows, the game belongs to the players.

Can you recognize what the game is asking from you?
Can you anticipate what might happen next?
Can you make the right decision under pressure?

Feedback from the coach isn't meant to make decisions for you. It's meant to improve your decision-making and sometimes help you recognize situations you may not be able to read yet.

Over time, the goal is for you to see those situations earlier, understand them, and find solutions on your own.

We can help you read the game.
But ultimately, the decisions belong to you.

Everyone Wants to Be a Champion. But Are You Willing to Pay the Price?

At the beginning of every season, when a coach asks about the team's goals, one answer is almost always the same:

“We want to be champions.”

But do we really understand what it takes just to have the opportunity to compete for a championship?
Sacrifice and commitment go beyond giving 100% on the field.

Sometimes, paying the price means saying no to distractions, bad habits, and choices that can take you away from your goals.
And even if you do everything right, there are no guarantees.

Everyone wants the trophy.
The real question is: are you willing to embrace the process required to compete for it?

What Coaches Notice in the First Week of Preseason

One of the first things I look for as a coach has nothing to do with technical ability.

Punctuality.

It may seem like a small detail, but being on time says a lot about a player's commitment to the process.
In a competitive environment, time matters.

Being ready before training starts shows respect for your teammates, your coaching staff, and most importantly, for the goals you have set for yourself.

Whether you're playing high school, college, or professional soccer, performance will always matter.

But coaches are also watching the details:

Are you on time?
Are you prepared?
Teammates rely on you?

Time is too valuable for procrastination.
Being on time won't make you a great player. But consistently being late can tell a coach a lot about how seriously you take becoming one.

A New Season Is Coming... Are You Ready for What's Ahead?

Whether you're returning for another high school season, joining a new program, or preparing for your first college preseason, every new chapter brings new challenges.

As a coach, these are three of the biggest challenges I see young athletes face.

1. The Physical Challenge
Every new level demands more.
You may be competing against older, stronger, and more experienced players. Be patient with your development and trust the process.

2. The Challenge of Adaptation
A new coach.
A new playing style.
A new position.
A new role.
Not every team will adapt to you.
Learning to adapt is one of the most valuable skills an athlete can develop.

3. The Emotional Challenge
This is the one we talk about the least.
Every new season brings expectations.
Sometimes reality doesn't match those expectations.
Playing time may not come immediately.
Your role may be different than you imagined.
That doesn't mean you're failing.
It means you're growing.

My advice is simple:
Be patient.
Observe.
Learn from your coaches.
Learn from your veteran teammates.
Keep working.
Adjust your goals when necessary.
Every season is a new opportunity to become a better athlete and a better person.

The players who embrace the process are usually the ones who grow the most.

⚽ What challenge do you think will be the biggest for you this season?

Coachable Players Go Further

One lesson that stayed with me while reading How to Watch Soccer by Ruud Gullit was the importance of adaptability.
throughout his career, he had to adapt to different clubs, coaches, teammates, and styles of play.

That lesson applies to every young athlete.
During your journey, you will face different physical, technical, and tactical demands. Every coach will have a different philosophy, and every team will play the game in a different way.

Many young players expect the team to adapt to them.
The reality is often the opposite.

The players who continue to grow are the ones who learn to adapt.
Success in one season doesn't guarantee success in the next.

High school is a transition.
College is another transition.
Every new environment will challenge you in a different way.

Talent may earn you opportunities.
Your ability to learn, adapt, and be coachable is what will keep creating them.

Habits and Development

Talent and training are important, but responsibility is also essential for a student-athlete’s development.

Sleeping well, eating properly, studying, analyzing performances, and keeping highlights updated may seem like simple tasks.

However, consistency in these areas separates athletes who only train from athletes who truly prepare themselves for the next level.

Development does not stop when training ends.
The habits you build today will shape the athlete you become tomorrow.
