Wolverines are the KING of ultra running animal kingdom, traveling further than many other mammals in North America. There range requires undisturbed wilderness areas and is why they are rarely found outside of the northern Rockies and Frank Church. Hotter summer heat waves and wildfires in habitat areas in the Cascades is one of the biggest troubles with this species making it back into the PNW with their rooming.

So what can we do? Support events and offroad areas/camping that doesn't disturb remote locations. Consider larger events/runs that are within or near population centers and close to towns. Question and comment on ski area expansion projects whose traffic would negatively affect both winter and summer habitat with increase vehicle and significant human disturbance. Backcountry ski and snowmobile in areas that doesn't disturb them. Largely, and most importantly: Leave no trace.

A new wolverine sighting was reported in Westport, Wash. on May 1.

Fun monument facts of the day:

- U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt created the first national monument, Devils Tower in Wyoming, on September 24, 1906
- 3 years later, over logging interest, Teddy created Mount Olympus National Monument on 2 March 1909. It was not designated a park till 1938, protecting it for 31 years.
- Mount Saint Helens Nat. Monument was created by President Reagan, on August 27, 1982
- Hanford Reach Nat. Monument containing the last free flow section of the Columbia River, was created on June 8, 2000
- San Juan Islands National Monument was made by President Obama, March 25, 2013.

For over a 100 years, presidents have had a history of success in protecting sacred and pristine federal lands. If any of these current and former monuments are dear to you, I recommend you comment on the Department of Interior public review on monuments created since 1996. Two of the above mentioned monuments are "open for review", out of 21 total. Comments can be submitted online starting tomorrow, May 12th. President Trump and Secretary Zinke will be making decisions that could undo the next Olympic Nat. Park.

The Department will shortly publish a notice in the Federal Register officially opening the public comment period. Written comments relating to the Bears Ears National Monument must be submitted within 15 days of publication of that notice. Written comments relating to all other designations subject...
