Nuuanu Aikido Club The Art of Peace Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, practiced the art until he passed away in 1969 at the age of 86. AIKI is to win over the self.

The foundation of AIKI is love. It is the embodying the spirit of the heaven and the earth in one's heart, and the maintaining the great spirit of loving embrace for all, in order to fulfill one's mission, that ought to be the Way of the martial art. This does not mean to forfeit the will to fight in the face of the enemy, but to gain absolute self-completion through the removal of all enemies. This is the Way of AIKI. Furthermore, AIKI is a martial technique in which the law of the universe is taken into the body, in order to attain the higher realm by uniting one's soul and body. Stretching, tumbling and pressure techniques make muscles firm and flexible. Attacking and defending in harmonious movements sharpen the senses and develop keen powers of concentration and mind-body coordination. Instruction in aikido philosophy, deep breathing exercises and weapons training (in advanced classes) purify and strengthen a person's character.

On Friday, July 24, 2026, Aikido Shinyukai graciously hosted an open practice, welcoming members from Aikido of Honolulu, Nuuanu Aikido Club, and Kailua Aikido.

Thank you to Aikido Shinyukai for opening your doors and bringing our community together. Opportunities like these strengthen the bonds between our dojos, allowing us to learn from one another, share our practice, and continue growing together as one aikido community.

On Friday, June 19, members of Aikido of Honolulu, Aikido Shinyukai, Hawaii Betsuin Aikido Club, and the University of Hawaii Aikido Club joined Nuuanu Aikido Club for a memorable evening of joint practice.
The night was filled with fun, fellowship, and excellent aikido as practitioners from across our community came together to train and learn from one another.
On behalf of Okatomi Sensei and all of our members, thank you for giving us the privilege of hosting such a wonderful event. We greatly appreciate everyone who attended and helped make the evening a success. We look forward to the next opportunity to come together on the mat and continue strengthening the bonds within our aikido community

It is a conversation written through movement a moment where resistance meets softness, and force is invited to continue on its own path.
The hands turn, the body yields, and balance quietly slips away. What appears to be a wrist technique is really a lesson in timing, awareness, and letting go.
Under the watchful eyes of Sensei, every repetition reveals another detail that was hidden before. The technique remains the same, yet somehow becomes deeper with each practice.
Like water finding its way around stone, Aikido reminds us that true power is not found in opposing force, but in understanding it.
