Volleyball has been played at the Outrigger Canoe Club for more than a century and is the major non-ocean sport sponsored by the Outrigger. Sand or beach volleyball was invented at the OCC on a day in 1915 when the surf was flat and members of the ocean-front Club were grumbling about not having anythin

g to do. In response, George “Dad” Center, the Club’s head coach, bought a volleyball net and a couple of volleyballs, and put the net up between the surfboard lockers and the canoe shed parallel to the beach. The game caught on and in no time, it outgrew the space so the court was relocated to a larger area in front of the Hau Tree Lanai where it continued to attract both males and females of all ages. Before long the game, which started as something to do when the waves were down, became not only a sport for fun and recreation, but a competitive sport for doubles, fours and six-man teams. In 1964 when the Club moved to its current Diamond Head location, a volleyball stadium was built with two regulation courts, a “baby” court and covered bleachers that seat 150 fans.

Great day of volleyball for the Outrigger girls. We hosted an intersquad senior/junior tournament, pairing our experienced athletes with our younger development group. Amazing to see the mentorship, growth, and competitive spirit across the board. Congrats to Makeely Rolles and Kendal Wong for taking home gold.

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Malaney and Bailey Devos for winning the women’s doubles tournament on Saturday, 2/28. We had 17 teams battling it out throughout the day and making amazing plays. Our current Outrigger Canoe Club beach players came ready to play, including many who have committed to elite women’s college beach programs. What a great day of volleyball!

Outrigger girls took on the BVCA 3v3 Duel in Vegas this weekend 🔥

They moved up divisions from Futures to Club level and finished 5th out of 14 teams, competing up a division and rising to the challenge. Proud of the grit, growth, and teamwork on display!

Mele Kalikimaka and Hau’oli Makahiki Hou to our entire Outrigger volleyball community!

We had quite a week of beach volleyball starting with our 2nd annual exhibition on Thursday, December 18. We featured amazing female and male players from the collegiate level up to the AVP! Everyone had a blast sitting down by the Snack Bar and Hau Terrace cheering on their favorite athletes. Mahalo nui for the exhibition photos above!

Then on Friday, December 19 we had an amazing turnout for court leveling,
even with heavy rain all week. Our community hauled sand, removed debris, and laid down the lines for our 4-person tournaments. Our court leveling event was followed by the always-fun Daddy Haine draw party at the Haines’ house.

On Saturday, December 20, the skies cleared (for the most part) and our Daddy Haine 4-Man Tournament was on. It was a great day.

Finally, we held the third annual Mana Wahine tournament on Sunday, December 21. Wahine of all ages participated and enjoyed super high level competition!

Phew!

We want to mahalo everyone who participated in some way: the players, the fans, the organizers, the Haine family, and , and the staff, Board of Directors, and Volleyball Committee. We had a blast with all of you and look forward to doing it again.

After a rainy Daddy, the ☀️ came out for the Mana Wahine women’s 4s tournament. Thirteen teams battled it out with the winning team going undefeated on the day. Congratulations to all the amazing Wahine and mahalo to all the fans that came out to support these women.
