Follow our page to stay up to date on Outrigger Canoe Club's programs, players and tournaments! Volleyball has been played at the Outrigger Canoe Club for more than a century and is the major non-ocean sport sponsored by the Outrigger. Sand or beach volleyball was invented at the OCC on a day in 1915 when the surf was flat and members of the ocean-front Club were grumbling about not having anything to do. In response, George “Dad” Center, the Club’s head coach, bought a volleyball net and a couple of volleyballs, and put the net up between the surfboard lockers and the canoe shed parallel to the beach. The game caught on and in no time, it outgrew the space so the court was relocated to a larger area in front of the Hau Tree Lanai where it continued to attract both males and females of all ages. Before long the game, which started as something to do when the waves were down, became not only a sport for fun and recreation, but a competitive sport for doubles, fours and six-man teams. In 1964 when the Club moved to its current Diamond Head location, a volleyball stadium was built with two regulation courts, a “baby” court and covered bleachers that seat 150 fans.

This week, our very own Milaniakai Padilla was named the AAU Player of the Year! This is an incredibly prestigious honor, with many past recipients going on to become NCAA All-Americans, Olympians, and professional volleyball players.

Milaniakai is not only an exceptionally talented athlete, but her relentless work ethic, positive attitude, and humility are what make us the most proud. She also competed up an age division in the 18U AAU Pairs Championship, where she and her partner finished 2nd overall in the Gold Bracket!

This recognition is so well deserved, and we can’t wait to watch her continue to grow over the next two years before cheering her on at Stanford. Congratulations, Milaniakai! ❤️🏐

So many amazing finishes to celebrate for our Outrigger girls! 🤩

This week at AAU Club vs. Club, our athletes put together an incredible showing:

🥉 Open Division: 3rd place in Gold
🥇 Club Division: 1st place in Silver
🥇 Club Division: 1st place in Silver
🏅 Club Division: 5th place in Gold

We couldn’t be more proud of the effort, grit, and teamwork these girls showed all week long. Every team represented Outrigger with heart.

Now we’re in the middle of the AAU Pairs Championships, with Outrigger athletes competing across all the age divisions. Excited to keep the momentum going and finish the week strong! ❤️🤍
