Tonight marked our first class at Honolulu Myohoji Mission, who has graciously granted us space for two classes a week. To mark our first night. A small group of students came after an earlier class at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i and trained again at our new space. This class we focused on utase and some experience with bare knuckle kumite to get a feel for the difference between bare knuckle and semi-contact and what it's like to hit and get hit without gloves.

Stopped by the Budoshop in Ikebukuro and picked up this photography collection of some old school Kyokushin training during Sosai's time alive.

Honestly it's pretty amazing what we can accomplish with the time given to us when we are willing to sacrifice time in the pursuit of our dreams. Thanks to Sosai, multiple generations of karateka have since emerged to learn and teach Kyokushin.

Longer than I've been doing karate, and about as long as I've done martial arts, I've been a Japanese speaker (since about 2003). I've had the pleasure of translating and interpreting Japanese in many contexts, but I've always had a special place in my heart for where my language abilities and my martial arts studies intersect.

Got a long flight ahead of me to Japan, so at least I got this book to keep me company. Will look forward to being back soon to train with all our students soon! Osu!
