I had an interview with Mark, founder of SocialTennis.com:

Oscar

What is your greatest achievement in tennis?
I have changed the overall approach to tennis throughout the world, and it manifests mainly in the quality of today’s professional tennis players. Those who rise to the top demonstrate what I have brought into the open.

Who is the most famous tennis player you have coached and made an impression on?
Guga Kuerten, whom I coached from the age of 5 through age 14. He got into the Zone from quite a young age, later going on to win, under another coach, three French Opens. Also, when Bjorn Borg was just turning 35 I coached him for one month, and from that he recuperated his former game and his ability to be in the Zone.

As a player, what was your biggest achievement?
Playing and practicing with the greats and learning their keys to success, from Emerson, Newcombe, Roche, Stolle to Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura and many others.

Who was your mentor and / or coach and who did you learn from the most?
From all those champions just named. They shared with me a great deal of how they felt about their own games.

You founded MTM (Modern Tennis Methodology), what is your coaching philosophy and how do you incorporate it into your coaching methods?
MTM is a summation of all that I learned from the best players of the game. I took each player’s best technical characteristics and created a model of what the highest standard would be for every stroke and every aspect of the game.

Tell us your favourite story about your time as a coach or as a player?
When coaching Bjorn Borg I told him he was rushing and that the more he waited on the ball the more time he would have. He responded "that is not logical”. “OK", I said, "do you recall playing the 1980 Wimbledon final against John McEnroe, with the long tiebreaker?" He said “yes". So I asked "did you see the ball slow or fast?". He thought about it and he said "slow". So I asked him, "were you waiting for the ball, were you stalking it?". He thought about it, and he responded "I was tracking the ball very long. I like the word tracking". Then he looked at me and I saw the pupils of his eyes dilating as he said "I see what you mean”. I said “Great!" I had him back in the Zone!!!!

Socialtennis.com is delighted to announce a partnership with MTM, where do you see this partnership going in years to come?
Changing the tennis world and tennis coaching for the better!!! Tennis is a sport that thrives on the player being natural, in present time, on serenity, simplicity, feel and instinct. Those are qualities of the inner being, and at MTM we strive to present tennis utilizing the best that is inherent in every person. A wonderful success story:
Dear Oscar,
thanks a lot for providing the link to your book. I forwarded it to my team members from our "Men's 40" team here at my club in Hamburg, Germany.
You have another "believer" here in Hamburg (me, obviously): A few months ago I purchased streaming access to all your videos and by now I am a complete fan of you and your teaching method. I am 49 years old and I started to play tennis again in 2012 after a pause of about 25 years (I started playing as a young boy of 7 years).
This year, after watching many of your videos, I made the biggest step forward since I started to play tennis again. I decided to try your method 100% and not to mix it up with other theories and that makes tennis so easy now. The result of your input was, that I have won two tournaments this autumn: I became mens' club champion and won a seniors tournament in Hamburg where I was beating three players ranked much higher than myself.
I believe, that one of he biggest difficulties for improvement is, that you need to be convinced that changing things in the technique is really for the good - you need to have trust in your teacher. This is what I have now with your videos. One big advantage that senior players have, if they use your method, is, that many of their oponents play pretty much "old school" tennis and don't dare to change anything. Most of the youngsters play more modern style anyway, but playing modern tennis at the age of 50 gives me an instant advantage over many of my oponents.
Also, the way you make your teaching knowledge available is very fair to the players. People feel, that your primary wish is not earning money but much more sharing your findings with the tennis world.
Thanks again Oscar! Really, really great!
With the best wishes from Hamburg
Lutz

Modern tennis is simple and easy.

Have you ever used a sponge ball (those oversized orange/yellow now sold for kids) and played it back and forth over the net with your hand?

This is perhaps the most basic and most helpful drill to do.

If you don't have a partner, you can do this drills against a wall or your garage door. Once you are proficient with your hand, then do it with a racquet, first holding it short, then normal.

For the backhand, hit barehanded with the left hand first, then with the racquet with the left hand short on the grip, then with two hands.

Work on control mostly, doing the three Fs (Find it, Feel it, and Finish), where you give the ball a good lift and at the finish you point to where the ball went with the butt of the racquet.

Brush up and across as well during the contact.

Initially, there will seem to be too little a time to finish the stroke as above, but with practice you'll feel a different rhythm and quite comfortable.

Move like a gazelle or a dancer, naturally, avoiding the skipping steps that complicate your performance.

Adopt a comfortable distance from the net or the wall, where you can easily keep the ball in play, back and forth.

Tennis is like a dance.

Work on creating an easy rhythm. Take your time and don't rush.

Bjorn Borg trained against his garage door. He ended up with the best forehand of his time.
