THURSDAY THROWBACK: This is Jewfish Creek in 1952 with the central feature of the photo being the beamed drawbridge. Also notable are the bridge tender’s home and the exposed waterline. The bridge was erected in 1944 and remained in service until 2008. The roadway connected by the bridge was commonly known as the “18-mile stretch.” Prior to the widening of the road––and the addition of guardrails and dividers—extended water outages were quite frequent in the Keys due to vehicles wrecking into and breaking the pipeline.
