A huge THANK YOU to everyone who made the Kachemak Bay Mountain Classic Portlock Half Marathon such a success! 💙

To put this on safely between Friends of Kachemak Bay State Parks and Kachemak Bay Running Club we had almost as many volunteers as we did participants! This event could not have been possible, or as much fun, without 23 of the most enthusiastic people lending their expertise for organizing the event, standing by for medical response, marking the trail, directing race participants, hauling bags, preparing sandwiches, sweeping, timing, capturing the memories, and especially the impressive tram crew zipping folks safely and swiftly across Grewingk Creek for hours and hours with a smile.

We are also incredibly grateful to Mako's Water Taxi, ATB Water Taxi, Seabird Ventures LLC, and FKBSP board members Jim Herbert, Alison O'Hara, and Silas Firth for donating boat transportation, and to Grace Ridge Brewing Inc for treating participants and volunteer to complimentary beverage vouchers after the race. Thank you all for helping make this unforgettable wilderness event possible!

Thirty runners and hikers tackled a rugged new course Saturday during the 2026 Kachemak Bay Mountain Classic, an annual fundraiser highlighting volunteer efforts to restore trails in Kachemak Bay State Park.

INFO ABOUT THE BEACH FINISH on race day July 11 - Note that high tide is around 1pm (15 ft) So if you finish between noon and 2 you will have to scramble higher up to the left to get to the finish at the FURTHEST end of the beach at Saddle Trails head. We tested out the finish at a 15.4 tide - it is totally do-able and we just had to scramble high up and duck under a few alders and did not get our feet wet. PLEASE tiptoe politely between the tourists at the bottom of the steps and no matter what time you arrive at the beach PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CAREFUL- WATCH YOUR FOOTING ON THE UNEVEN ROCKS AFTER YOU COME DOWN THE STEEP STEPS. Once you hit the sand - then you can run for the photo finish.

Here is a picture of a "Wet Exit" at Humpy Creek before the start. REMEMBER your crocs, Tevas or neoprene shoes that morning. (NO rubber boots of any kind - we cannot lug boots to the finish) It will be a refreshing start to the day !
