Happy National Thank a Superintendent Day to Michael Eargle!

A great golf course doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a whole lot of early mornings, long days, and behind-the-scenes work to make the experience what it is.

Michael, thank you for everything you and the crew do to keep Stono Ferry in great shape and give our members and guests a course they’re proud to call home.

It's easy to look around Stono Ferry and think, "What a beautiful golf course."

But there's a lot more happening here than meets the eye. Those marshes aren't just pretty scenery. They're one of the most important ecosystems in North America, naturally filtering water, protecting South Carolina's coastline, and providing a home for hundreds of species of birds, fish, and wildlife.

Then there are the live oaks. Some of these giants have likely been standing here for centuries. They may have already been mature before the Revolutionary War, surviving hurricanes, changing coastlines, and generations of history while watching this landscape evolve.

And here's one that surprises almost everyone… that Spanish moss hanging from the branches? It isn't Spanish (or even moss). It's actually an air plant that's more closely related to a pineapple than moss, pulling the moisture it needs straight from the air.

It's funny how a golf course can change the way you look at nature. The next time you tee it up at Stono Ferry, take a moment between shots to look around. You're not just playing through a beautiful landscape. You're playing through one of the Lowcountry's most remarkable natural environments!

Most golfers stop for a photo with the cannon. But almost nobody knows why it's actually here. The 12th hole is called Redoubt, and that's not just a catchy name.

A redoubt was a temporary military fort built to defend an important position during battle. During the Battle of Stono Ferry in 1779, British soldiers constructed defensive earthworks right here on this land.

The cannon stands as a reminder of that history. So the next time you're standing on the 12th tee, you're not just looking at one of the course's most recognizable landmarks…

You're standing where soldiers once defended one of the most important river crossings into Charleston. It's not every day your golf course comes with a history lesson that dates back nearly 250 years!
