Divers and snorkelers have been complaining about boat traffic close to shore for years. Neither nor seems to be concerned enough to do anything about it. The even moved mooring buoys close to shore to attract boaters where swimmers might be. Move along folks, nothing to see here.

American Airlines flight attendant Kellie Williams, 31, was found dead on a Florida beach after an apparent boat strike while snorkeling, officials said.

Florida is one of the only places on Earth where the geography itself feels slightly unhinged… and honestly that’s exactly why people love it. 🌴🌊💀

Because somebody looked at a giant swamp peninsula hanging into hurricane water and said:

“You know what?
Let’s put 23 million people here.”

And somehow it worked. 😭

Florida stretches nearly 450 miles from top to bottom, which means this state basically contains:

• tropical islands
• giant wetlands
• beach cities
• cow pastures
• rocket launch sites
• theme parks
• retirement communities
• fishing towns
• jungle-looking highways
• and at least one alligator currently judging traffic from a drainage ditch.

North Florida still feels a little Southern:

• pine forests
• small towns
• college football everywhere
• random boiled peanut stands
• and thunderstorms that appear out of absolutely nowhere.

Then Central Florida becomes pure controlled chaos:

• Disney traffic
• I-4 psychological warfare
• endless suburbs
• afternoon lightning storms
• tourists making illegal U-turns across six lanes 😭

And South Florida?

That’s an entirely separate reality.

Palm trees.
Ocean everywhere.
Luxury condos.
Boats.
Heat.
Humidity.
People driving like they’re actively fleeing the law.

Meanwhile the Everglades are just sitting there quietly containing:

• alligators
• pythons
• panthers
• mosquitoes large enough to file taxes
• and water that looks calm until something prehistoric blinks at you 💀

Then there’s the coastline.

Florida has over 1,300 miles of coastline, which basically means no matter where you are, eventually you’ll run into:

• beach traffic
• salt air
• thunderstorms rolling offshore
• or somebody towing a boat with extreme confidence and minimal preparation.

And somehow…
the weather is even crazier than the geography.

Florida doesn’t experience weather normally.

Florida experiences atmospheric mood swings.

One minute:

☀️ perfect sunshine
🌴 blue skies
🍹 calm breeze

Thirty minutes later:

⛈️ lightning everywhere
🌧️ sideways rain
🚨 emergency weather alerts
🌀 patio furniture achieving flight

Then the sun comes back out immediately like nothing happened. 😭

And despite all the chaos…
Florida somehow developed its own identity:

part tropical paradise…
part swamp survival simulator…
part retirement village…
part wildlife documentary.

It’s one of the only states where:

• iguanas fall from trees
• alligators appear in golf courses
• hurricanes get ranked like sports teams
• and people still wear hoodies when it’s 72 degrees. 🌴💀

Hot.
Chaotic.
Beautiful.
Humid.
Completely unpredictable.

And deep down…
Florida wouldn’t want to be normal even if it tried. 🌊🐊☀️

Know your reef!

Know your reef!

It all starts with a coral polyp! 🪸 These tiny ocean-dwelling animals are the basic building blocks of every reef on the planet.

Here’s the breakdown:

1) Corals live in colonies made of multiple tiny, identical polyps.
2) Corals pull calcium and carbonate from seawater to build hard skeletons—providing structure for both themselves and the overall reef architecture.
3) This structure provides essential shelter and food, creating a complex system that allows marine life to thrive.

18 months ago, this post stirred a lot of controversy, perhaps because it was in the news and people were passionate about the issue. But overtime people have settled down,, and divers have learned that we can learn lessons even from tragedy.

Because I was a rescue diver in the Navy, I have been asked what the dive is like in searching the sunken, super yacht off the coast of Sicily. The boat rests intact in about 160 feet of water. In that area, the water is relatively clear with 25 to 30 feet visibility on the bottom. temperatures at that depth range from 55to 70° at this time of year, depending upon current flow. As most advanced trained recreational divers know, one cannot remain on open circuit scuba at for more than about 10 minutes without serious decompression stops before surfacing. Add to that the risks of entering the close confines of a sunken vessel and you can imagine the difficulty those rescue divers face.
