RACE REPORT SAN ANGELO
Concho Valley Dragway! Race Report
We watched the weather all week leading up to the Southwest Superchargers event June 6 @ Concho Valley Dragway/San Angelo, Tx. 60% chance of rain Friday, 40% Saturday. OK, go and take our chances. Worked out pretty good. We didn't race on Friday. Saturday the forecast was rain chances disappeared after 5:00 p.m. And the Weather Person got it right!
But the SWSC could only come up with 5 cars. So SWSC CEO Don David thought of a way to keep our agreement with Track Management and provide an SWSC show for the Concho Valley race fans who came expecting to soak up some alcohol fumes from quick loud supercharged machines. Lacking enough cars for a respectable competition ladder, the SWSC would have 4 qualifying runs (as opposed to our regular 2) and then have a Chicago-style final, based on qualifying times. So let's look at who ran what.
Q-1 began after the track personnel finished clearing the rain water from the last downpour. Took 'em a couple hours, but indeed they did. Track surface was as clean and dry as any racer could want. A few local bracket types were encouraged to make their best efforts, and sure enough the track proved dry and ready for the horsepower of our SWSC. Rodney Ferguson made the first pair with Jeff McClure opposite. Great! Rodney (driving the r.e.d. of Steve Meiwes) went 4.832/127.8 to Jeffs 4.590/152.6. Next Steve Spurlin lined up his big block altered with Garry Coufals dragster. Garry went I believe his quickest pass ever, a sweet 4.691/140.0 to Steves bouncing 5.662/99. Last car up was a single for Luke Myrick in the Myrick family small block powered slingshot. A nice 4.961/123.6 was his reward.
Q-2 went off as Spurlin met Ferguson. 6.599/69 for Spurlin and 4.740/124.9 for Rodney. Myrick displayed a 5.023/122.7 against Coufals 4.655/144.6. And Jeff went bye and showed a quality ladder topping index crushing 4.605/151.7. It's gonna be tough to do better than that.
Q-3. Ferguson 4.631/136 (does anyone else detect a pattern here?). Spurlin 4.858/120.8 (possibly the quickest pass I have ever seen the Amarillo altered make). Myrick 5.57/86 (oops!). McClure 4.585/153.1 (too quick again, that is, under the SWSC index). Garry Coufal had a tire failure in Q-2 and was done for the weekend.
Q-4, last chance for anyone to climb the ladder and improve their standing. Ferguson/Meiwes 4.858/130. Myrick 6.198/86. McClure 4.663/150.4. And Spurlin 9.419/42, a dismal pass originated by tire shake and bouncing the slicks completely off the track.
SWSC Staff and Management decided we would still award the First and Second Place plaques by closest to index, but after a final pairing pass by everybody. #1 Jeff McClure (.005 off index) would run vs. #2 Rodney Ferguson (.031 off). #3 Steve Spurlin (.258 off) would run #4 Luke Myrick (just for the fans in attendance).
#3 Spurlin made another attempt to keep his monster big block on the track, but could only make it go 8.923/48 vs, Lukes 5.498/99. But a close pass was appreciated by all when Rodney went 4.752/138.3 against McClures better 4.659/149.9. First Place to Jeff McClure. Runner-Up to the team of car owner Steve Meiwes and driver Rodney Ferguson and their families.
Thanks to all our SWSC loyal teams who made the trip, the first time the SWSC has run at Concho Valley Dragway.
Next up for the SWSC, Lubbock Raceway July18. C'mon, let's go racing! We'll see you there!
