Raging River Siberians

Raging River Siberians A small dog sledding team based in Hixton, Wisconsin My mushing adventure started when I first brought Indie home as a 7 1/2 week old puppy.

She's now five years old and our pack has grown to four AKC/CaKC Siberian huskies. Indie is our lead dog, with Sage and Onyx as wheel dogs. Titan is the Canadian new recruit and we are still figuring Ik out his place on the gangline. We do dryland races and snow races from October through April around the midwest. This week we had a blizzard, celebrated Sage’s 9th birthday, and ending the week, we have all the windows open and doing some spring cleaning on a balmy 70 degree afternoon!

On this day in 1925, a team of dogs led by Balto came in to Nome, Alaska. Their driver Gunnar Kaasen was the final musher in a life saving relay to deliver diphtheria antitoxin to a community that was suffering.

While Balto brought the serum to its final destination, we shall not forget the endurance, fidelity, and intelligence of Togo. At age 11/12, Togo and his driver Leonhard Seppala ran through the toughest parts of the trail. Teams were battered by gale force winds and arctic temperatures. Leonhard and Togo ran 261 miles out of the 674 mile relay, crossing the Norton Sound to save as much time as they could.

Today, most modern Siberian huskies can be traced back to Togo, including my own little crew.

Happy National Sled Dog Day!

A little late but I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Looking forward to 2026!

Tuesday we had a pretty decent snow storm, I was able to leave work early. Decided on the way home “eff it!”

The dogs were sooo happy and they went about 2.1 miles before I could no longer see. Running around the village in the storm was magical

A little photo dump 🥰

Enjoying time off with lots of naps, hoping for some snow so we can get on the sled this winter even if it’s just for fun!

Deer hunting is coming up soon, so I will be trying to fill the freezer. 🦌

No stress, just blessed 🤍

My apologies for the post being a little late, but we are wishing the best of luck to Team USA this week!

The IFSS Dryland World Championships and Masters is being hosted by the USA for the first time in Minocqua! Races go through Sunday.

23 countries are in Minocqua competing!

Cheering on my fellow Americans and friends!

Not a post I want to make, but for both the health of my dogs, Indie specifically, and financial reasons, we will not be racing this year.

We will still venture out for fun runs.

After racing for consistently for several years every year I also just need a break. It was not an easy decision to make but the dogs always come first and we will be back on the circuit next season with bikejor teams 🤍

Thank you

Pulled my trailer for the first time since December! My boyfriend helped me check and spray boxes for hornets and we have a plan to even out the weight because the trailer favors the rear end.

Trailer is in the garage now so the dogs can get reacquainted now that it’s bee-free. Baby steps

Hey ya’ll! It’s been a hot minute. Summer is flying by it seems, since my last post, Titan turned 8 on May 27th and Indie turned 10 on July 8th. All the dogs are in good spirits but we’ve had some ups and downs with hot spots, paw issues, and tummy issues this summer, but everyone is doing good. Very grateful for our veterinary office!

Aside from that, here is a small photo dump of the dogs during their summer vacation 🙂

Found something awesome at Hope Gospel today and had to get it! A VHS copy of Balto, the movie that started the mushing dream for me as a little kid!

Never had the actual tape, but my mom had recorded it in a blank tape for me. Box is in great shape for being 30 years old! Going on my mushing shelf!

Late post but today (February 2nd) was National Sled Dog Day!

Today marked the 100th anniversary of the Nome Serum Run! In 1925, a deadly diphtheria outbreak was ripping through the towns and villages of the Seward Peninsula in Alaska. Due to impending weather, they could not fly in or ship the antitoxin by sea. The last resort was a relay of dog teams meeting up with the train in Nenana.

20 mushers and 150 dogs took part in the relay. Covering 674 miles in 5 1/2 days.

The often unsung heroes of the Relay were Leonhard Seppala and his team of dogs, led by Togo, who at the time was either 11 or 12 years old. They covered the most dangerous stretch of the relay, crossing the ice covered Norton Sound. They ran 261 miles out of the 674. No other team ran as far as Togo and Seppala.

The medicine was soon passed off to Gunnar Kaasen, whose team was led by Balto. After a 55 mile run, they arrived in Nome on February 2nd, 1925 early in the morning, delivering the life saving antitoxin. Balto achieved fame and had a statue of his likeness erected in Central Park, NYC.

Recently in 2019 a movie was released by Disney, focusing on Leonhard Seppala and Togo, finally getting the recognition they too deserve. I always cry at the end. If you haven’t seen Togo, it’s a must!

Next month we have the Iditarod race and like Seppala, the teams cross the Norton Sound (if safe) to arrive in the checkpoint of Koyuk.

Happy National Sled Dog Day!
