Mr. Dale Pearce from Mississippi broke the front leg on this very old native deer in McMullen county. My friend Wade Rhodes got the call but his good dog Ringo had been gored on another chase, so he asked me to help him. It was hot, dry and dusty. We put Boots on the track and at about 400 yards he lost the trail and began circling, trying to pick it up again. After about 45 minutes I left the hunters at the truck went out to him and tried finding the trail on ahead. That didn’t work so I took Boots back to the truck and hauled him to a tank for a good drink and cool down. Then we put Boots out at the starting place again and he found where the deer had turned off. So after about 2 1/2 hours on the trail Boots finally bayed the deer.
Mr Pearce had known and hunted this eight or nine year old deer for several years. He was one of the best native deer we recovered all season.
Wade’s dog Ringo is now fully recovered.
Thanks to all the hunters for your trust in us this season. By the grace of God we never had a dog hurt this year.

This buck was bow shot behind the shoulder by a hunter with Lone Oak Adventures, on a ranch near McCoy Texas. Next day, Boots found him at 800 yards then ran him 700 yards and bayed him. As soon as we finished him, Boots went to water at the truck and missed being in the picture. Boots hates picture taking!

Rufus has trailed one deer this season. He is eleven and a half, healthy and enjoying his retirement. Would anyone like to share pictures of deer he has recovered for you?

In bone dry McMullen county, this very nice old deer was shot with a rifle and trailed with another dog. Caden went with me, and Boots and Vato found and bayed the deer at 550 yards.

I love finding someone’s first deer. Young people are not the least bit concerned with Boone and Crockett scores. They appreciate more the fun of the hunt and the beauty of the deer. Boots found this one over a big hill and already dead in the Frio county sunshine.

Caden and I went to D’hanis where this young man had broken the shoulder on his first deer. Vato got the first bark and led the chase ahead of Boots, down out of a brushy hill and into a clearing near where we were parked. Boots arrived shortly and both dogs bayed him.

This old Frio county buck had a broken hind leg. Migo and Vato trailed and ran him 2.47 miles before he bayed.

Congratulations to Maddie Lowe, who shot her old buck down below Catarina. Boots jumped him at 450 yards and ran him 200 yards back toward us and bayed.
