The name is….DOUBLE LEG KICK!

It’s a lesser known Classical Pilates Mat exercise…and it’s definitely unique.

Not all Pilates classes do the actual Classical series, so you might not have done this one.

And that’s cause there’s a lot going on in this exercise! Legs are kicking, upper back is extending, and pelvis stays very stable. It’s not easy!

Are you a fan of this exercise or not?!

Comparison is the thief of joy!

I know this from growing up in the ballet world.

So I have a motto of “Never be jealous of someone who’s put in more practice/time.” That motto has served me well, and can hopefully help you too.

Sometimes my clients even compare themselves to me! They’ll get frustrated that they can’t do it as well as me. 😂 To this I ask, “How many times have you done it? Because I’ve done it thousands of times.”

Humble yourself grasshopper. Have patience, while you put in the practice.

So another rule I gave myself, which you may use is….”Until I’ve done it 1,000 times I will not get frustrated. In 1000 times I will master it.”

I apply that to all movement and it keeps me focused instead of frustrated.

Sending support on your journey! Keep practicing!

Everyone you meet is silently dealing with something. Something behind the scenes. Something physical, or mental, or spiritual. We’ve all got something we’re silently carrying. All of us.

One of mine is EDS, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Until I knew this was a real thing I was silently dealing with all the symptoms, and there are many. My biggest ones are extremely lax/ unstable joints due to loose connective tissue, chronic overall pain with fatigue, and major red face when I do cardio 😂

I’ll tell you others lessons I’ve learned living with this later, but back to the red face…

My entire life I’ve been athletic, since the age of 3 till now I’ve ALWAYS had a constant variety of movement practices…. ballet, Yoga, Pilates, weight training, sports, martial arts, dance, running, hiking, swimming…and so much more.

And in EVERY single one of them I’ve encountered the red face. 😂

When I played on the basketball team they stopped a game once to check on me! 👹

When I took a Zumba class the teacher stopped the class and asked on the mic if I was ok! 😭

And this pic is me today after doing 20 minutes on the Stair Climber, after a cold shower and a cold press. I’ll stay red for awhile. My cardio is good, it’s just that I will turn red when I’m working hard.

My symptoms used to make me feel weak and that there was something wrong with my body.

Now I rock it! I trust myself to monitor my edge. I know how to slowly build so that it’s more manageable. And I just simply rock the red!

The symptom hasn’t gone away, but my resistance and anger and embarrassment about it has.

One of my greatest gifts from having this body is that I use this wisdom to help others. I guide them in shifting the relationship they have with their body.

Are you needing a shift like this?

Do you know why the term “Classical” Pilates exists?

It’s because over the decades people have veered away from Jospeh Pilates’ original work, while still calling it Pilates.

Now I’m not dogmatic, I also teach different variations of the exercises, and don’t always stick to the original sequencing…BUT, I’m able to teach a completely Classical class, because I know it.

I believe in BOTH; contemporary Pilates has its place, but I also believe every single Pilates teacher should be taught his original work.

Otherwise this amazing method of movement will disappear.

What do YOU think? Contemporary versus Classical? Or do you practice and teach BOTH?

And the name of this Classical exercise is Shoulder Bridge by the way. It’s often done with the hands underneath the pelvis, but I rarely do it or teach it that way due to wrist strain.

We can adapt the original work while still honoring the system.

And let me know if you’re ready to learn this amazing method (adapted to your body of course!). I’m currently accepting new in-person clients in Hilo, Hawai’i and virtually from anywhere. Comment READY or send me a DM to get started.

Are YOU a juicing fan?
I practice (and teach) MOVEMENT & NOURISHMENT!

One time I juiced for an entire summer, had so much energy I’d go run in the middle of the night.

Now I do a juice cleanse whenever my body/ mind needs a reset.

At Nu’u Pilates Studio we focus on whole body wellness, from the inside out.

CHRONIC / SEVERE pain can suck physically….and mentally!

It can be very challenging to know what is helping or what is hurting in your movement practice.

I highly recommend having allegiance ONLY to your body, in that very moment. Not to what your mind says will help. Not to what your trainer has told you (or the internet). But what YOUR BODY is actually telling you.

Now this skill takes practice. It’s requires sovereignty and agency. And it requires PRESENCE and BREATH!

And it often takes a guide at first.

This is the work I do in my 1-on-1 program called Movement as Medicine. We learn to actually listen to the body. And to slowly build trust and communication with it.

Learning to manage chronic pain via movement requires courage, compassion, and consciousness. And you are worth learning these.

Reach out if this is resonating with you. We begin with a free 30-minute phone consultation.

Why do you think most Pilates classes nowadays aren’t doing any Classical Pilates Matwork???

My hunch is because….it’s HARD!

It can take months, if not years to be able to do some of the exercises. And in our modern times I’ve found that people often want a quick fix, as well as that sexy Instagram picture for their grid 😂

Nothing wrong with wanting quick results….except that some things just don’t come quickly. They require commitment and dedication.

And nothing wrong with wanting some great photos either, just have some Pilates in them ya know! 😉

With my private clients and in my teacher trainings we work on both actually!

I teach the preparatory (contemporary) exercises to get you stronger faster, while working long term on the harder Classical Pilates exercises. I believe in both, while still staying true to Joseph Pilates’ original work.

So back to that Neck Pull exercise, have you ever tried it?!

And if you’re wanting to deeply learn a method of movement you can use for life (I’ve been practicing for 25 years) I’ve got you!

I’m currently accepting new virtual clients worldwide and in-person clients at my private studio here in Hilo, Hawai’i 🌺

We start off with a free 30-minute phone consultation. Message me to set it up!

Do your research! Not all teachers are trained the same. There’s a BIG difference between weekend workshops and a 2-3 year apprenticeship training.

And you’re allowed to ASK!! A qualified teacher will never take offense when you ask them about their training and experience.

It’s YOUR body, and it’s worth finding someone qualified to actually help you.

And if you need an advocate in your recovery journey, reach out! I offer a FREE 30-minute Phone Consultation.

Because despite the trends and gimmicks, Classical Pilates stands the test of time.

And although I LOVE the machines, the whole system came from the Matwork.

I teach PRIVATE 1-on-1 anywhere virtually and in-person at my gorgeous private boutique studio conveniently located in Hilo, Hawai’i 🌺

Plus I offer annual group Mat+ Teacher Trainings & PRIVATE TEACHER TRAININGS anytime!

What’s YOUR opinion on teachers taking the class with you?!?

Demonstrating an exercise is a different thing. And I believe you must be able to perform yourself any exercise you teach (or have been able to do so proficiently in the past).

In my Pilates Mat+ Teacher Training I am emphasizing that they must be able to teach the class WITHOUT taking it themselves.

How else can they focus on the bodies in front of them?

AND, it makes you an incredible teacher when you can lead with accurate, precise verbiage.

This lesson hit home hard when I was once injured and in a wheelchair. I wasn’t able to do anything physical! Instead I focused on my wording and can report that that experience made me a MUCH better teacher.

I’d love to know YOUR opinion!

P.S. I am accepting new apprentices in my PRIVATE Pilates Mat+ Teacher Training here in Hilo, Hawai’i 🙌 Reach out to hear the details!
