Hillsdale Cross Country has a new coach: Charles Holbrook, who was a standout 400/800/1600m runner at Hillsdale High and then ran at Hillsdale College and Tiffin University. He arrives next week and is excited to begin.

As active team members already know, I resigned from my position as cross country coach, but stayed on to help through the summer.

I received a full-time employment offer from MLive Media Group. A former supervisor contacted me with a chance I could not refuse.

I have thoroughly enjoyed cross country and working with all of you. To see students improve and grow has been exciting and fulfilling. It challenged and changed me. Thank you for your support, cooperation and commitment. I know there is much left to do. It saddens me not to see it through, but I know the power is in you, in the team, in remaining positive and enthusiastic and motivating yourselves and others. I see greatness in every one of you, and I hope you see it too.

Keep putting miles under your feet. It is difficult and arduous at times, I know, but there is so much satisfaction in doing what is hard, and it is so much fun being part of a team. Be consistent. Push yourselves. Dare to realize your potential.

Go Hornets.

Big thank you to Jill Richards, Dezirae Bigelow and Coach Dave Schiman for chaperoning. (Schime is fond of tenting ๐Ÿ˜‰) Shoutout too to Marc Richards for hauling and loaning equipment - he spent eight hours in his truck - and to Rob Bryan for securing water and Bob Evans sausage link donations. We appreciate the support!

Hillsdale cross country camp 2021 in South Haven! We climbed dunes, kayaked they Black River, and slayed mosquitos. We foraged for fire wood, picked nearly 20 pounds of blueberries in 15 minutes - contest! - and jumped waves in Lake Michigan. Oh, and we did some running too ๐Ÿ˜‰ Fitter, stronger, faster together.

Iโ€™m a little late on this, but the track season concluded Saturday at the D3 state meet in Jenison. We had four podium finishes! Congrats to high jumpers Rianna Vincent, who placed 8th with a jump of 4โ€™11โ€, and Aidan Flannery, who was sixth by clearing 6โ€™2โ€. The girls 4x100 (Shelby Stuchell, Kia Charboneau, Amelia Dietz and Rylie Dietz) was 8th in 52.2 and the boys 4x100 (Hunter Wilson, Cody Sprunger, Charles Young and Brett Adams) was sixth in 45.28. Awesome job, runners and jumpers!

Jonah Richards won the 800 (2:08.0), battling with Jacob Walker of Columbia Central all the way to the line. The boys 4x800 (Jeryde Calvin, Boom Tangprapa, John Maier and Jonah Richards) also proved to be best in the conference, taking first in 9:03.8. They were among several league champs, including the girls 4x100 and 4x200 (Shelby Stuchell, Kia Charboneau, Amelia Dietz, Rylie Dietz, Tyra Wortham, Kelah Hodge and Annemarie Moore), the boys 4x400 and 4x200 (Hunter Wilson, Charles Young, Cody Sprunger, Brett Adams, Jeryde Calvin, Stephen Petersen, Draydon Eckelberry and Tommy Lorenz), Hailey Granata in both hurdle events, Rianna Vincent and Aidan Flannery in the high jump, Kia Charboneau in the 100 and Brock Woodard in the long jump. The boys now move on to the team state meet Saturday at Clare.

Good day at regionals yesterday on our home track. All the girls sprint relays (Kelah Hodge, Rylie Dietz, Annemarie Moore, Kia Charboneau, Shelby Stuchell, Amelia Dietz and Tyra Wortham) and the boys 4x100 (Hunter Wilson, Charles Young, Cody Sprunger and Brett Adams) qualified for the state meet, as did Aidan Flannery and Rianna Vincent in high jump and Brock Woodard and Peter Moore in long jump. The girls 4x100 and 4x200 were regional champs! Heartbreakers for the boys 4x400 and 4x200 teams. They came close, but did not make it through to the finals.
Lots of personal records for the distance squad.
The 4x800 ran under 9:00, taking 6th in 8:58 with two personal best splits - Jeryde Calvin (2:12.5) and John Maier (2:13.9). Jonah Richards anchored with 2:09.4 and Boom Tangprapa ran No. 3 in 2:21.4.
Sydney White had an excellent double with two personal records - 6:10.6 in the 1600 and 2:47.7 in the 800.
Nolan Grant (5:06.95) and John (5:07.90) had big PRs in the 1600.
John came back and ran his best-ever open 800 in 2:15.2, good for 9th, just one spot from scoring - and Boom finally crushed 2:20 in the open 800, running 2:17.5.
Nolan ran 11:14.1 in the 3200, his personal best by about 8 seconds. Bryan Springer ran the 2-mile for the first time in 12:31.
In the 4x400, Jeryde led off with a 52.06 split and Jonah ran 53.8. Jordan Barnes (58) Aidan (52.94) ran the 2 and 4 spots. They finished fourth in 3:37.

Another solid day on Saturday for the distance squad, and the track and field teams. The boys were third and the girls took fifth at the Jack Beilfuss Invite.
Big PR in the 4x800: 9:07.4. Boom Tangprapa (2:19), John Maier (2:15) and Jonah Richards (2:09) ran splits that bettered their personal bests and the team beat Hillsdale Academy to take third.
In the mile, Nolan Grant took sixth in his best-ever time, 5:15.5.
In the open 800, Sydney White ran well, clocking 2:47 and taking sixth. This was a personal record by 3 seconds.
Jonah ran 2:07.1, a huge personal best, hacking off 4 seconds. He battled for third but was edged out by 0.01 at the line. Boom Tangprapa (ninth in 2:22.6) and Bryan Springer (15th in 2:25.6) also ran personal open records.
In the 3200, Nolan and John both placed. Nolan was sixth in 11:31 and John was 8th in 11:47.
Jonah, after two fast 800s, then ran the lead leg for the 4th place 4x400 team.
Next, regionals at home!
