🏆 Alcatraz Camp Thoroughbred of the Day • Day 3

Closing out Alcatraz Camp with Joe Newell as our Day 3 Thoroughbred of the Day.

Joe is one of those kids who just works. No drama. No shortcuts. He shows up, gets after it, takes coaching, and keeps getting better. The kind of kid you can count on to raise the level of the room just by being in it.

That’s what the chain is supposed to represent.

Joe joins our growing list of summer TOTD winners, with one athlete ultimately earning a FREE 4-month TWA membership.

Most young wrestlers don’t actually have any idea what they are doing in the scrambles.

They have effort.

They have athleticism.

They have a little bit of panic…

…and then they just start making things up.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

The best scramblers aren’t just “good in a scramble.” They know what they’re looking for. They recognize positions, have answers ready, and move with a purpose instead of just hoping something good happens.

That’s what this camp is about.

On Saturday, August 29, we’re going to build a scramble system. Not just random techniques, but a way to think through these positions so you can create more scoring opportunities and stop giving them away.

Session 1
🕘 9:00–11:30 AM
👥 Wrestlers ages 9 and older

Session 2
🕧 12:30–3:00 PM
👥 High school only
💲 $40

High School Combo
🕘 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
💲 $70

The morning session is open to wrestlers ages 9 and older. The afternoon is reserved for high school wrestlers so we can speed things up, dive into more advanced positions, and spend more time in live situations.

Because the difference between surviving a scramble and winning a scramble usually isn’t talent.

Technique matters.

Strength matters.

Conditioning matters.

But none of those things matter if an athlete doesn’t have a system they can fall back on when the match gets hard.

At TWA, we call ours the Winning Ways.

These aren’t just rules. They’re habits. They give our wrestlers something to control when everything else feels chaotic. They create confidence because confidence comes from preparation, not hope.

This isn’t ME explaining our system. It’s one of our athletes.

When the athletes can teach the culture, you know the culture is taking root.

Alcatraz Camp | Thoroughbred of the Day - Day 2

Looking back at this summer’s Alcatraz Camp, Keaton James earned our Day 2 Thoroughbred of the Day honors.

The award isn’t about being the best wrestler in the room. It’s about showing up with the right attitude, being coachable, pushing yourself, and making the people around you better. Keaton embodied all of that.

Each camp had its own Thoroughbred of the Day winners, and one of them will be selected to receive a FREE 4-month membership to Thoroughbred Wrestling Academy. Congrats, Keaton! 👏🐎🔥

Congratulations to Jay Hall on being named Youth Mat Camp Day 2’s Thoroughbred of the Day! 🐎

Jay showed up with a contagious attitude, worked from the first whistle to the last, and never backed down from a challenge. He was coachable, encouraged the kids around him, and proved that toughness isn’t just about how hard you wrestle, it’s about how you carry yourself every minute you’re on the mat. That’s what being a Thoroughbred is all about.

At every TWA camp, we recognize one athlete who best embodies our Thoroughbred Core Values. It’s not always the athlete who wins the most matches—it’s the one who consistently demonstrates the character, effort, grit, and attitude we want to build.
