Have you heard of the “Dirty” belt tradition? Early practitioners rarely washed their belts believing that in doing so would wash away their hard-earned knowledge and experience. Do you wash your belt?

Congratulations to Isaac on earning his blue belt.

A blue belt represents more than just techniques learned. It’s consistency, perseverance, problem solving, and the willingness to keep showing up through the difficult days.

We’re proud of the work Isaac has put in and excited to watch his Jiu Jitsu continue to evolve. Well earned.

“I CAN FEEL I AM ALIVE.”

I’ve been interested in Jiu Jitsu since college, but I didn’t fully commit until the late 2010s. Life got in the way—job changes, family responsibilities—so I had a lot of stops and starts. But now I’ve found consistency, and even better, I’ve brought my family along with me. My son trains, and now my wife does too—and she’s really loving it.
Jiu Jitsu has shown me just how resilient my mind and body can be. You don’t really understand that until you push past your limits and step outside your comfort zone. I’ve seen that same growth in my kids—their confidence is higher, and they trust themselves more, both on and off the mats.
Honestly, what almost made me quit
was just feeling like I wasn’t good at it. I’d hit plateaus, and things didn’t seem to click. But I stuck with it because I knew there had to be a better way to learn. At Oregon Jiu Jitsu Lab, I finally found that. The teaching style here helped me connect everything—nothing feels random anymore.
One moment I’ll never forget? Hitting a standing takedown on someone bigger and more experienced who had been coming after me. That was a turning point.
If you’re nervous to start—good. That means you’re about to grow. Step out of your comfort zone, give it time, and see what you learn about yourself.

COMPETING LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR ME NOW. At 45, with a family, my priority is simple: stay healthy and avoid injuries.
Before I turned 40, I focused on expectations—performing well and making my coach and teammates proud. Now my mindset is much simpler: just don’t get injured today.
For anyone nervous about trying their first class—don’t be. Just enjoy it and be patient. You won’t understand everything right away, and that’s okay. There’s nothing to prove.
Don’t focus on winning or losing, especially in the beginning. Focus on learning and staying safe.
For me, Jiu Jitsu means one thing: never give up.
It’s more than training—it’s something that helped me through a serious health condition. It taught me patience, resilience, and how to keep moving forward even when I’m exhausted.
My body isn’t perfect, but Jiu Jitsu helps me keep living my life.

Registration is LIVE for Sub League Open

ROUND ROBIN + POINTS: The Sub League Open follows Sub League’s classic round robin format (no one is eliminated after losing a match). It is a pointed Jiu Jitsu tournament where matches are decided by submission, highest score, or referee decision. Submissions reign supreme, so in the case of a tie within the round-robin scoring, wins by submission will carry more weight than wins by points or referee decision.
