We are not a franchise or affiliated with ATA, but independently owned & operated by Ms. Thompson. Hilliard Taekwondo Academy (HTA) is not a franchise and is not part of the ATA, but is independently owned by Ms. Thompson, 7th Degree Black Belt. She is a member of Taekwondo America, a national organization for independently owned taekwondo schools and she is currently the Vice President on the Sr

Partner team. Visits to HTA are by appointment only at this time, and to reduce inside crowding & noise level, only instructors & the students for each class, plus ONE person per student family in the current class (and that one person is a parent/guardian) may be inside. Others may watch from outside and view classes taking place in our nearly 3,000 square foot workout floor through our wall of windows all along the sidewalk. We're helping all ages become more self-confident and physically fit; to never give up as they overcome challenges and disappointments; to develop respect & impulse control; and that hard work and effort helps achieve goals. Excellent workout for our teen/adult program (great program for the parents of our junior students). You want your children to respect you.

That means 1) setting expectations and boundaries ...
and then 2) following through to consistently and calmly hold them accountable.

Consequences are uncomfortable, but it's that uncomfortableness that will help to shape and improve their behavior.

We reward the behavior we accept.

And the behavior we accept will impact their success at school, in friendships, and on the job.

Teaching kids to be accountable.

Kids are going to make mistakes as well as poor choices, and the earlier in life we can help them learn how to manage next steps, the more successful they will be at home, at school, in friendships, in activities, and in a career.

Parents often ask us to chat with their child as part of their family's "village" when an issue happens.

The natural reaction when faced with the uncomfortable results of those mistakes & poor choices tends to be:

🚫Denial

🚫Deflection

🚫Avoidance

🚫Anger

🚫"No one likes me"

🚫"Everyone always picks on me"

Our goal is to avoid being led down the rabbit holes that can be created with each of those ☝️ and to help them stay focused on:

✅the facts

✅their role in the situation

✅different choices they could have made

✅next steps

✅... being accountable

Accountability is often uncomfortable.

Uncomfortableness encourages us to change. 💛

Kids' photos ... good for business?

Yes, we read & hear all the marketing tips explaining that posting daily photos & videos of our busy classes would increase engagement, and attract more customers, but ...

✅ we don't post our students in our public-facing social media

✅ and we don't allow visitors or families to take photos or video of anyone other than their family member

With all that we're hearing about the negative ways AI allows others to misuse images, especially of minors, we're glad we never jumped on that bandwagon.

You may love seeing your kids smiling faces online ... or you may not.

Your family.
Your images.

Social Cues

Why do we include developing the ability to read Social Cues in our martial arts program?

When kids misread or don't pick up on Social Cues, they may become offended, hurt, embarrassed, or angry by others' reactions.

The child who feels embarrassed or offended may lash out verbally or physically, or they may withdraw from people and activities.

Providing kids with the opportunity to learn to improve their ability to read Social Cues helps them develop confidence as they experience and work through those situations.

This can reduce physical retaliation and improve friendships.

Reading Social Cues can take practice.
It's not always easy or comfortable at first, and we're here to help.

Summer Boredom is just around the corner 🫣

With all the end of school-year activities it's hard to remember just how quickly summer boredom sets in, and then how challenging it is to get back into a schedule in August.

This summer can be the FUN bridge between the end of this school year and a successful start into the next one.

✅Fun active classes
✅Continue developing respect & focus
✅Indoor program with A/C
✅Become more confident
✅Improve decision making skills
✅Learn to stand up to negative peer pressure
✅Set & achieve goals
