The old days of hiding under a tree or lying flat on the ground are gone.
Today’s experts say:
• If you hear thunder, you’re already in danger.
• Get off summits, ridges, and open areas immediately.
• Don’t shelter under isolated trees.
• Spread your group out.
• Don’t lie flat on the ground—ground current is a major killer.
• The best defense is early decision-making, not a fancy lightning position.
As a mountain guide, my rule is simple: If thunder is talking, it’s time to start walking downhill.
Avoidance beats survival every time.
