Motivation is not what keeps you on the mats. Discipline is!
Every class asks a lot of you. Show up to something hard. Get uncomfortable on purpose. Fight your own ego in front of other people. Follow rules you did not write. Nobody stays excited about that forever, and that is not a flaw in you. Motivation has an expiration date, and yours will expire.
What is left after that is discipline.
Every belt in this room had nights they did not want to be there. What separated them was not enthusiasm. They went anyway.
Parents, this one is for you too. Kids have fun in class, but the fun is a byproduct, not the engine. Expecting a child to stay motivated week after week is expecting something that does not last long in a kid. Once they walk through our door, we can build the discipline. The hard half is the twenty minutes before that, at home, on the night they say they do not feel like going. When you get them here anyway, you did the heavy lifting.
What they are actually earning is discipline, humility, coordination, confidence, and the ability to lose and come back tomorrow. All of it follows them into every other sport they play and every part of their life.
Jiu jitsu is not motivation. Jiu jitsu is discipline.
See you on the mats.
