June 22, 2007:

Kris Watts of the Hickory Crawdads Baseball Club had a monster game in an 8-5 victory over the Greenville Drive. He went 4-4 batting, which included a triple, and he had two runs scored and two RBI. Watts would be an all-star in the Carolina League in 2009 with the Lynchburg Hillcats, but never got the call up to the Major Leagues. In 2007, his only season with Hickory, he played in 90 games, and batted .261 with 40 runs scored and 41 RBI

June 21, 1954:

The Carolina League folded. The Hickory Rebels led the league with a record of 34-18 at the time the league closed. This information can be found in the fantastic book: Baseball in Catawba County, by Tim Peeler and Brian McLawhorn

On this date in local sports history

June 19, 1982:

Newton native John Settleymer won the Winston 200 at Hickory Motor Speedway. The Busch series race, as it was known at the time, was the 15th race on the schedule that season, and the only win for Settleymer that year with six starts in the series. He led the final 53 laps to take checkers.

Could Settleymer be in the inaugural class of the Hickory Motor Speedway Hall of Fame? We will find out before August 1.

June 18, 2020:

Tonight should have been the first night of the Couch Potatoes alternative identity for the Hickory Crawdads Baseball Club. The 'Dads had announced in early March of 2020 that they were going to use this branding for games June 18-20, however, COVID cancelled the entire 2020 season for all of Minor League Baseball.

June 16, 2006:

Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton hosted the 57th North Carolina Women's Amateur Championship that ended on this date. Adrienne Millican shot 72-68-70 over three rounds to win the event by three shots and finish 6-under par -- the lowest winning score in the history of the tournament.

On this date in sports history

June 15, 2017:

The New York Mets placed 2B Neil Walker on the 10-day disabled list with a partial tear in his left hamstring. He was with the Hickory Crawdads Baseball Club in the 2005 season as a farm team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played in 120 games, batting .301 with 12 home runs and 68 RBI for the Crawdads in 2005. He ultimately retired in 2020.

June 10, 2015

Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball's Ivan Vietez was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He was only the fourth player ever drafted from LR, and was the first since 1991.

On this date in local sports history:

June 9, 1984

The Yount 200 was held at Hickory Motor Speedway, and was won by Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame member (2015), Tommy Houston. He led 160 of the 200 laps. Houston won 24 races in the Grand National, later known as Busch Series, and now known as the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series. Houston had 417 career starts in that series.
