Coaches: Try To Remember...

04/02/2023

An old man meets a young man who asks:
“Do you remember me?”
And the old man says no. Then the young man tells him he was his student, And the teacher asks:
“What do you do, what do you do in life?”
The young man answers:
“Well, I became a teacher.”
“ah, how good, like me?” Asks the old man.
“Well, yes. In fact, I became a teacher because you inspired me to be like you.”
The old man, curious, asks the young man at what time he decided to become a teacher. And the young man tells him the following story:
“One day, a friend of mine, also a student, came in with a nice new watch, and I decided I wanted it.
I stole it, I took it out of his pocket.
Shortly after, my friend noticed the his watch was missing and immediately complained to our teacher, who was you.
Then you addressed the class saying, ‘This student's watch was stolen during classes today. Whoever stole it, please return it.’
I didn't give it back because I didn't want to.
You closed the door and told us all to stand up and form a circle.
You were going to search our pockets one by one until the watch was found.
However, you told us to close our eyes, because you would only look for his watch if we all had our eyes closed.
We did as instructed.
You went from pocket to pocket, and when you went through my pocket, you found the watch and took it. You kept searching everyone's pockets, and when you were done you said ‘open your eyes. We have the watch.’
You didn't tell on me and you never mentioned the episode. You never said who stole the watch either. That day you saved my dignity forever. It was the most shameful day of my life.
But this is also the day I decided not to become a thief, a bad person, etc. You never said anything, nor did you even scold me or take me aside to give me a moral lesson.
I received your message clearly.
Thanks to you, I understood what a real educator needs to do.
Do you remember this episode, professor?
The old professor answered, ‘Yes, I remember the situation with the stolen watch, which I was looking for in everyone’s pocket. I didn't remember you, because I also closed my eyes while looking.’
This is the essence of teaching:
If to correct you must humiliate; you don't know how to teach.”

Head Trash.

We all have it. (CEOs, Athletes, Mom’s, Dads, Friends, etc.)

On some days it’s louder than on other days.

Head Trash can interfere with our ability to be our best.

Be aware of your head trash - your self-talk.

Hear it and don’t let it define you or limit your TODAY.

Identify negative self-talk patterns.
Reframe negative thoughts. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones
and use positive affirmations to help boost confidence and self-esteem.
Use visualization and mentally replay great moments in work, life, and sports to fuel your confidence.
Practice mindfulness: breathe, meditation - take a few moments to quiet your mind.
Take action towards your goal.

Great Sports Minds are trained.

In sports and the game of life.

Start.

Just start.

Whatever it is you have been putting off.

Start now, imperfectly and courageously.

You don't have to wait for everything to be perfect or for the circumstances to be ideal. Just start where you are, with what you have. You can refine, adjust, and perfect it along the way.

The most important thing is to take that first step towards your goal."

This is the advice I gave myself today as I embark on my latest project: creating a journal for injured athletes. It's a project I planned to complete in 2022 but never got around to starting.

But now I have created a deadline, one that is fast approaching. On June 13, I'll present to a group of Sports Medicine professionals, Athletic Trainers, and Physical Therapists "From Setback to Comeback: Sport Psychology Strategies for Athlete Injury Recovery." I'll share my strategies to help athletes overcome the mental challenges of injury and confidently return to sport.

This is personal to me. In 2021, I had a freak fall that left me with a head injury, broken elbows, and torn ligament in my dominant wrist. I had to use all the skills I teach for optimum performance to get through this tough time.

I know firsthand that when an athlete is injured, it can be one of the most challenging times in their career. They can lose their sense of identity, community, and self. That's why there's a need for additional resources to help athletes mentally recover from their journey.

So, I've finally started my journal project, imperfectly and courageously.

And if you know of an athlete who has navigated an injury and would like to share their strategies and advice with other athletes, we would love to learn more. Together, we can help athletes overcome their injuries and make a successful comeback. They can connect with me via this form http://ow.ly/O13350N11xL

Mindset shows up in everything we do.

When I told my family that I was going to publish a mental performance training journal for athletes, my oldest gave me a quizzical look. (DOUBT)

My objective was to create a resource to help athletes learn essential mental performance skills used by elite athletes, to compete more relaxed and with greater confidence.

When I published the Great Sports Minds Journal in December 2020, I would check orders almost daily.

Two years later - it's different. I am too busy to check every day.

Last night I took the time to see how the Journal was performing this month.

To my surprise, I discovered that I had sold 128 copies in February, including two large group orders. (Most self-published books sell less than 250 - 300 copies over the lifetime of the book!)

More individual and large group orders are the goal.

The Journal is an excellent tool for a coach to use with their team or for a Travel Program to introduce to their program.

THE GREAT SPORTS MINDS ATHLETE JOURNAL - is a game plan for success in sports and life. This 90-day Journal helps athletes of all levels unlock their full potential through three comprehensive sections:

The Winning Formula: This section consists of 8 fundamental questions that will help you clarify what truly matters as you pursue excellence in your sport and life.

90 Daily Reflection Pages: Unlock your inner athlete with daily writing prompts and motivational quotes that will help you establish consistent reflection habits, communicate your goals, express gratitude, embrace self-improvement, and hold yourself accountable to your commitments.

12 Weekly Challenges: Take your mental performance to the next level with essential mental performance skills used by top athletes to leverage their minds' power for success. These weekly challenges include powerful techniques like breathwork to center and calm, visualization exercises, releasing a poor performance, and more.

And that's not all! As a special bonus, you'll get to sample our online mental performance training program and one of our most popular meditations, Letting Go.

As an author, it's exciting to see my work being appreciated by readers and making a positive impact.

Join the countless athletes who have already benefited from THE GREAT SPORTS MINDS ATHLETE JOURNAL - order yours today!

“You want to cherish these moments with the people that you’ve come so far with, your family, your loved ones, your teammates, your peers, everyone that you do it with and do it for. I’m so proud of this team. I would say I’m so proud of this team for everything that we’ve been able to overcome. Obviously, we had a big-time goal that we wanted to accomplish and we came up short. I think the beautiful part about it is everyone experiences different pains, everyone experiences different agonies of life, but you decide if you want to learn from it. You decide if you want that to be a teachable moment. I know I do.”

I don’t do this to be loved, to be hated, to seek anyone else’s approval. I do it for the guys in the locker room, for all the time we’ve invested, for the love, and thrill of the time we’ve invested in it. Tough feeling to come up short, but only direction is to rise. - Jalen Hurts
