FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I hope everyone is in the process of adjusting to back to school. It is an exciting time of the year BUT also the start of the whining season (I'm tired, I have homework, I don't like my teacher, blah blah blah). DO NOT FEED INTO THE PITY PARTY. THAT WILL ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE! ACCEPTANCE IS THE FIRST STEP IN PROBLEM SOLVING AND PERSONAL GROWTH.

REMEMBER - We all have the same 24 hours in the day and 168 hours in the week, and 672 hours in the month. We all have the time to get everything done if we focus on what's important! Wasting time should be the last priority in our lives. Sure, we all waste time occasionally but do it when the work is done and when it serves a purpose like taking mental health or relaxation break. This is a critical lesson children need to learn in their formative years in order to live happy, productive, and fulfilling lives. It is far easier to understand this early on than to try to rewire as an adult.

Unfortunately, for many, wasting time and procrastinating is a habit they will struggle with forever. Folks with this habit remain in a depressing cycle of meaningless goal setting with no intention of ever achieving anything because wasting time (to avoid discomfort) is more important than personal growth. If you speak to folks with this habit, they tend to be at a loss as to why they are failing, complain, and offer excuses, not even realizing they are doing it. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink."

So what to do when faced with discomfort you can't avoid? Well, you can take your ball and go home or sit in the corner and suck your thumb or show leadership and make the best of the circumstances. It's not rocket science; act responsibly and find a way to move forward and grow and, in the process, set an example for others. We need that these days more than ever.

So, give kids going back to school time to adjust, eat good foods, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep. Then stop accepting excuses and expect them to move forward positively. Kids will rise to our expectations (as long as they are reasonable. and constructive). On the other hand, if you allow it, they will whine and complain until they get what they want, which is to do nothing and blame it on someone else.

We have had several students train from 5 years old become the valedictorians of their high schools while competing in varsity sports and earning a 2nd-degree black belts, so no whining allowed! 10-20 hours a week on Facebook, Video Games, Texting etc. will not get you a job, improve your quality of life nor make you an interesting person to be around.

If you or your kids are struggling, first define the issue, and then work on the challenge. That's what we do at BKS. Need help? ASK FOR HELP!... no one gets there alone. We all have (or should have) teachers, mentors, and butt kickers in our lives. The secret of our program at BKS is surrounding ourselves with positive, goal-oriented people that will support us and also call BS on us when necessary. Before giving up on worthwhile goals, give up the junk holding you back and reach out. For those that need it, consider BS called, and your butt kicked. πŸ™‚

Time for me to do actual work now. FYI 2-4 hours on FB is NOT real work. Unless you are retired, as you have earned the right to do whatever you want to. But I can still think of better things to do.
As always, It's all how you look at it...

It's time for the churn again... what is the churn? ... it is the stress we feel when we experience significant changes to our routines. Things like seasonal changes, back to school and even daylight savings create churn.
This time of year, it is the changes families experience for back to school. It is kind of amusing as it seems to sneak up on some folks every year despite my annual lectures on getting up earlier in August and setting a routine ahead of time that includes reading etc. . So, we see families that imposed little structure in the summer that now must force structure nd, discipline on each other, overnight. Boom, it seems like a massive change that creates, stress that naturally everyone wants to run away from. Hence, I can't fit in my 2 hours of training blah blah blah. πŸ™‚
The bad news is if you didn't prepare you just have to suck it up now. The good news is that the churn only lasts for a couple of weeks until you settle into a new routine. Oh, and remember if everyone on the planet is going through the same churn, you're not special enough to whine and make excuses.
Learning to accept and manage churn is important for both kids and adults, otherwise we will never be able to preserve and accomplish anything. There are plenty of things in life you do not control, and the annual churns is one of them. What you do control is your attitude and how you react to the natural stress of churn.
So, stay calm, adapt, overcome, and get ready for more natural churn at daylight savings, winter weather, spring fever and the start of summer. BaileysHerkimer.com
