Please know that our Cemetery Sexton continues to face challenges from red imported fire ants, which are widespread across much of Texas. Fire ant mounds can create safety hazards for visitors, maintenance staff, and funeral attendees by causing painful stings and obstructing mowing and groundskeeping operations. Effective fire ant management is essential to maintaining safe, accessible, and respectful cemetery grounds for the public. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension identifies fire ants as a significant pest in turf areas, noting that their mounds interfere with maintenance activities and pose risks to people and pets. Our Sexton was advised by the State of Texas on how to treat and control the fire ants, but it sometimes contributes to temporary bare spots in turfgrass, particularly when mound treatments kill vegetation directly around the nest or when large colonies have already damaged the surrounding turf. Repeated treatments, soil disturbance from mound activity, and environmental stress can slow grass recovery, leaving visible bare areas that affect the appearance of the cemetery grounds. These bare spots will be seeded and will hopefully have new growth soon. Thank you for understanding.
