Behind the Scenes Monday 🐴

Sometimes “behind the scenes” at a barn is about taking a minute to think about why we're doing what we do.

As Slow Twist continues to grow, I've been working on putting into words what I want our program to represent.

Creating meaningful connections between horse and rider.

That happens through good riding, but it also happens through horsemanship, groundwork, horse care, confidence, and learning to understand your partner or teammate, the horse.

That's really what Learn. Ride. Grow. has come to mean at Slow Twist. We're developing riders, but we're also developing horsemen: people who can think, feel, problem-solve, and continue learning.

There are lots of different ways into the horse world, and not every rider has the same goals. That's okay. Whether someone wants to become a stronger rider, compete, learn more about horses, try vaulting, or simply build confidence around them, I want Slow Twist to be a place where there's room to grow.

Happy Friday from Slow Twist! 🐴

Our Friday night not only included riding, it also included prepping for the weekend’s trailer-loading sessions — because tomorrow we’re putting this week’s Trainer Tuesday into practice with some hands-on practice.

Getting the horses comfortable with loading is only part of being prepared. Hooking up regularly also gives us a chance to make sure the truck and trailer are in good working order before we actually need to haul somewhere.

Train the skill before you need the skill — and check the equipment, too! 😊

🐴 Trainer Tuesday: Train the Skill Before You Need the Skill

Trailer loading is one of those skills that’s easy to put off or even ignore — until you need it.

As we prepare for our fall competitions, we’ve identified a few horses who could use a little extra practice with this — so that when show day arrives, trailer loading is simply part of the routine.

Like so many things with horses, the goal isn’t simply getting them into the trailer. We want them to understand how to approach the trailer, step on quietly, stand patiently, and unload safely — building enough understanding and confidence that loading becomes just another part of their routine.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be putting that into practice with a few of our horses — and we’ll share some of that process along the way.

Monday Behind the Scenes 🐴

Show prep isn't always about what happens in the arena.

As we start looking ahead to fall shows and competitions, we're also paying attention to some of the practical skills our horses need — including trailer loading.

A few of our horses have reminded us lately that this is an area where they could use a little more practice. And that's exactly why we work on it before show day.

Loading, standing quietly, unloading and becoming comfortable with the whole process are skills just like anything else we teach. The goal isn't simply to get the horse on the trailer — it's to build enough confidence that loading becomes a routine part of going somewhere.

Because the morning of a show is not the time to discover that your horse has decided the trailer is questionable. 😂

Sometimes preparing for competition means working on transitions, courses and riding skills.

And sometimes it means spending a training session working on the practical skills that make everything else possible.

It's all part of the process.

Happy Friday from Slow Twist! 🐴

What happens when your trainer puts you on a horse you don't normally ride?

The lesson starts before you ever get in the saddle.

First, you have to go find your new partner in the pasture — and figure out how to catch them!

How do they react when you approach? Do they stand and wait? Walk away? Can you read their body language and adjust your approach?

Learning to catch a horse in the field is one of those simple horsemanship skills that teaches so much: patience, awareness, timing and confidence.

And riding different horses does the same thing. Every horse feels a little different, responds a little differently and has something new to teach us.

Sometimes the best lessons start long before we get to the arena.

Trainer Tuesday 🐴 | Listening to the Horse

Good training isn't always about doing more. Sometimes it's knowing when to do less.

With temperatures still hovering around 100°, we're paying close attention to how our horses are feeling before, during and after every ride. That may mean shorter rides, lighter work, extra walk breaks — or a good rinse before and after riding to help them stay comfortable.

Several of our horses also had chiropractic work this past weekend, and some need a little more time than others to ease back into their regular workload.

The lesson for our riders? Listen to the horse in front of you. Training plans change. The horse's comfort and well-being come first, and learning to recognize when they need something different is part of becoming a better horseman.

And sometimes what they need is simply a cool hose on a very hot Texas evening. 🐴💦

Monday Behind the Scenes 🐴

Not every behind-the-scenes moment comes with a great riding photo — sometimes it looks a little more like this. 😂

But you can always tell when fall is getting closer around the barn...

Summer schedules start settling down. Riders who took a break begin coming back. Show plans start making their way onto the calendar. And new faces start appearing on the lesson schedule.

This week, one new adult rider scheduled his first lesson — and a little while later, we got another message: his wife would like to ride, too.

We love seeing that, because riding isn't just something for the kids. Some adults are returning to horses after years away, some are starting for the very first time, and some simply decide this is the year they're finally going to do something they've wanted to do.

Behind the scenes, we're starting to see all those pieces of fall come together — and we're looking forward to seeing where the season takes everyone.

Happy Friday! 🐴 Thinking about getting back in the saddle?

Today we welcomed back a few riders who had taken a break from riding — and it was a great reminder that you don't have to wait until you feel completely "ready" to come back.

Whether you've been away for a few months or a few years, returning to riding can start right where you are. You can revisit the basics, rebuild confidence and rhythm, and work toward whatever you'd like to do next.

With fall right around the corner, we're putting together our lesson schedule and have openings for new and returning riders.

Trainer Tuesday 🐴 | Learning to Feel the Horse

Sometimes the weather changes the lesson plan — but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to learn.

With the heat this week, we spent part of our lesson learning how to assess our horses before and after work. Riders practiced checking CRT (capillary refill time) and TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration) and talked about what those numbers can tell us about a horse's condition and recovery.

Then we cooled everyone off with the hose and traded saddles for ba****ck pads.

And that turned into a training opportunity of its own.

Without a saddle between horse and rider, our riders could really feel how their horses were moving underneath them. We used that feedback while working on shoulder-in at both the walk and trot — feeling the bend, the movement of the shoulders and hindquarters, and how small changes in the rider's position influenced the horse.

Sometimes adapting the lesson gives us the opportunity to work on things we might otherwise overlook.

Good horsemanship isn't just about what you can do in the saddle. It's learning to observe, feel and respond to the horse in front of you.

Monday Behind the Scenes 🐴

This weekend was all about vaulting!

Saturday morning, our older vaulters worked together on their skills, and Sunday evening it was time for our younger group to take over.

We were especially happy to welcome back two of our families who took the summer off — although our younger vaulters may have been just a little excited to be back together! 😄

One of my favorite things to see is our vaulting families bringing friends along, too. Vaulting is a fun way for kids to get comfortable around horses, build confidence and coordination, and be part of a group — even if they’ve never ridden before.

As we head toward fall, we’re continuing to grow our vaulting program and would love to introduce a few more kids to the sport.
