I know I’m not supposed to play with my food...

Nobody said anything about testing it.

The Tuna Can XL just landed at TRB, and this chunky bastard is headed to the range.

No safe queens. No desk reviews. We’re going to find out what it actually does.

Testing starts soon.

The r***e has changed. The CMMG hasn't.

I originally ran this CMMG Bravo .22 conversion in an earlier version of this same AR. Years later, the r***e looks quite a bit different, but I'm still using the same conversion.

For me, that's a much better test of gear than what happens during the first trip to the range.

Does it still work?

Yep.

Would I buy it again?

Hell yeah.

Can you and should you are two very different questions.

I wanted to hear what subsonic .22 LR would sound like through my Thunder Beast Magnus, so I took an old CMMG Bravo conversion I've had for years back to the range.

The result?

Ridiculously quiet.

There are also good reasons I wouldn't make a habit of it. Rimfire am******on is dirty, and the Magnus isn't a dedicated rimfire suppressor.

Sometimes you do a test simply because you want to know the answer.

Ta**us Raging Hunter in 460 S&W Magnum. Borrowed from a friend who said, "see what it can do."

Five loads. One cylinder. 240fps phone slow-mo in portrait.

From a 200gr HSM Cowboy Action 45 C**t at 760 fps to a 300gr Hornady Backcountry Defense 460 Mag at 1850 fps. In between: 325gr HSM Bear Load 45 C**t +P at 1155 fps, 265gr Sellier & Bellot 460 Mag FMJ, and 325gr HSM Bear Load 454 Casull at 1330 fps.

Watch the recoil impulse, muzzle climb, and cylinder gap signature across the power spectrum. The ported barrel and cushioned grip make the top end "almost" civilized.

Almost.

What load are you starting with?

This project ran so long that R***r bought out Anderson Manufacturing before I finished the receiver.

Current status: JP Enterprises Ultra-Light BCG installed with their Silent Captured Spring. Two tungsten weights plus one steel weight. Two spare steel weights still in the baggies, waiting for their moment.

The build fires. Then it doesn't. Then you cycle it manually like you're back in 1895. Classic lightweight AR behavior when the reciprocating mass hasn't been tuned to the carrier.

Last step: get the buffer weight dialed so the system cycles like a system, not a parts bin with delusions of grandeur.

Some builds teach you patience. This one taught you corporate restructuring.

Range report when this thing stops gaslighting me.

Behind the scenes at SHOT Show.

I had the chance to jump on Riding Sh***un With Charlie with Charlie Cook, and it was a solid conversation.

Before the cameras roll, there’s always the setup. Here’s a quick look at Charlie getting the ride ready before we hit the road.

Good talk. Great time.

Thunder Beast Magnus.

Built for precision.
Built for consistency.

But that’s just claims.

Now we test it.

• Does it shift POI?
• Does it tighten groups?

Same r***e.
Same shooter.

One variable.
