It’s January and we had a grass fire near the lodge. I happened to step outside to check on Toby the lodge dog and saw flames at the neighbor’s house & people racing around attempting to put it out. I threw a shovel into the side-by-side and raced over to help. There were probably 15 people all doing what they could to quell the flames. Some were running buckets of water, some spraying with a garden hose, some with shovels batting down the burning grass and 2 little bobcats attempting to create a trench. The fire department had been called but it’s a volunteer crew and not close, by any means. It was a huge relief to see them when did finally arrive.
It’s been breezy here since yesterday, consistent winds of 15-20 mph. Even though the wind was blowing away from the lodge, the fire was still able to creep towards the lodge due to tall, thick, dry grass and plenty of it laid down by the snows we’ve had.
Even though we’ve had some decent snow dumps, the snow has not stuck around for long due to the air temps climbing back up into the 50’s & even the 60’s. And we’ve had consistent winds to further dry things out. I’m hoping that we finally get winter weather that stays wintery. And that we don’t have any more people burning when conditions are not favorable for a controlled burn.
