It’s January and we had a grass fire near the lodge. I happened to step outside to check on Toby the lodge dog and saw flames at the neighbor’s house & people racing around attempting to put it out. I threw a shovel into the side-by-side and raced over to help. There were probably 15 people all doing what they could to quell the flames. Some were running buckets of water, some spraying with a garden hose, some with shovels batting down the burning grass and 2 little bobcats attempting to create a trench. The fire department had been called but it’s a volunteer crew and not close, by any means. It was a huge relief to see them when did finally arrive.

It’s been breezy here since yesterday, consistent winds of 15-20 mph. Even though the wind was blowing away from the lodge, the fire was still able to creep towards the lodge due to tall, thick, dry grass and plenty of it laid down by the snows we’ve had.

Even though we’ve had some decent snow dumps, the snow has not stuck around for long due to the air temps climbing back up into the 50’s & even the 60’s. And we’ve had consistent winds to further dry things out. I’m hoping that we finally get winter weather that stays wintery. And that we don’t have any more people burning when conditions are not favorable for a controlled burn.

It’s been almost 3 months since I moved to Fort Smith to manage the Kingfisher Lodge. It’s been a wild, challenging, rewarding journey so far. And I’m loving the beautiful skyline here. I was concerned about missing the mountains but that fear is unfounded.

In 2 weeks time I move to Fort Smith to manage the on the Bighorn River. To say that I’m excited is an understatement. But I’m also sad to leave the community that I’ve been a part of for 20+ years as an adult.
I’m blessed to be able to immediately put my newly obtained outfitters license to use at the lodge…in addition to managing the lodge, I will be the outfitter as well. I will also guide a little bit and put my captain’s license to use.
It will be hard to leave the Missouri River and the fellowship that I’ve built over the last several years. The Mo’ is a special place that I will always come back to when I have free time.
I’ve created a niche of instructing women one-on-one and in clinics on the Mo’. I’m excited to continue that at the lodge where I will now be able to utilize a physical plant that I’ve been dreaming of for years.
It’s been a pleasure to build my professional career here in Helena. The amount of support that the community has provided me is incredibly impactful and immeasurable. I am blessed to have been on the receiving end.

I leave July 8th for the season and come back after we close the lodge in October. I will then come back to Helena for the winter and then permanently move to the lodge in February. I hope that I get the pleasure of hosting my friends and acquaintances at the Kingfisher in the future.

My dad and I were catching nice rainbows when my dad pulled in a pike! His first one on a fly. He was fishing a leech under an indicator.

We were surprised that he was able to get this in without the notorious pike teeth cutting his line. It's not the first pike to be caught in this location. You can see a pike bone at my dad's feet that we only noticed after he caught this one.

My last minute trip to Mazatlan to fish bass on the fly was amazing and I’m so thankful for the opportunity that unexpectedly came my way and for the people I got to meet.

We started in Lake El Salto and because it’s an endeavor to get anywhere south of the US border from MT, I joined the group late and only got a chance to fish El Salto for an hour. I managed to catch a couple tilapia in that hour.

We then moved to Lake Picachos for the rest of the trip. While Lake El Salto has BIG bass, Picachos has a few of them but more of the little to 2-3 #’s. I was fortunate to catch a 4, 5 and 6 # bass among many other smaller ones. Others had the fortune of catching 8 & 9 # bass on El Salto.

With little time to prepare for the trip, I grabbed a bunch of saltwater flies that I thought could work. Fortunately, the bass really liked my Flip Flop Gurgler, originally bought for tarpon fishing.

I plan to return to El Salto & Picachos in the near future and I hope others will join me in an amazing bass fishery. Angler’s Inn provides amazing amenities and service at both locations. Big bass anyone?

I had the great pleasure of talking about my passion of fly fishing instruction with Dave Stewart of It’s a little unsettling to be called a bad-ass, but I am really flattered 🙂. If getting out there and doing what I love and building upon it is bad-ass, then I guess I am!

We had an amazing weekend for the final women’s Missouri River fly fishing clinic of 2024. Outrageously nice weather for mid-October made it comfortable for the women to learn knots, rigging, bugs, casting and wade fishing. Thank you to for sharing your space and knowledge with the women. It’s so greatly appreciated!

I had the great fortune to spend last week in learning more stillwater tactics from THE guru . I stayed on a couple more days to “practice” with my friend Trisha. For our week we fished the private lake, Sheridan Lake, and Henry’s Lake. Big cutthroat were the primary catches with a couple hybrids. One of my classmates caught a brookie. If you’ve driven by the when going through Island Park, make a stop the next time. The owner Michael is as nice as they come and his staff are great. And their lodging digs are super comfy. We all had the pleasure of getting on the water instruction from whose passion for Henry’s Lake is undeniable. Being the only girl in the class, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of men between the instructors and my classmates.
