One of the last public speeches John F. Kennedy ever gave was right here in Arkansas, and most people have no idea. 🇺🇸

On October 3, 1963, President Kennedy came to Heber Springs to dedicate the newly completed Greers Ferry Dam on the Little Red River. He spoke to a crowd of thousands, praised the project, and celebrated what it would mean for the region. Just 49 days later, he was assassinated in Dallas.

That Arkansas hillside crowd was among the last to see him speak in public before he was gone. Greers Ferry Lake exists today in part because of that dedication, and it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the state. So tell me: did you know JFK's last major public address was in Arkansas? Drop it below and follow Arkansas Underground for the history hiding in our own backyard. 👇

White River Brown Trout Research Project: Spring 2026 Update
Earlier this month, the Trout Management Program worked with University of Arkansas Pine Bluff personnel to complete a sixth season of the Bull Shoals Tailwater (White River) Brown Trout Research Project. Over the course of 4 nights, we collected 1,025 Brown Trout, of which 785 were “new” fish implanted with Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags. We also recaptured 250 Brown Trout we had tagged during previous sampling events.

Data from recaptured fish provides us with important information about growth, survival, and movement, which will guide our future management actions. Brown Trout collected during the season averaged 15.8 inches, but ranged in length from 7.3 to 31.1 inches. Since fall 2024, we have tagged ~4,400 Brown Trout and logged 612 recaptures.

Arkansas Wildlife Weekly Fishing Report
June 4, 2026

This is Shon (no last name provided), who caught a nice 19-inch rainbow trout while fishing with guide Austin Kennedy on the Beaver Lake tailwater recently. Kennedy says the Army Corps of Engineers is releasing colder water through the system at Beaver Dam, and they’re working with AGFC biologists to closely monitor conditions throughout the tailwater. The colder releases have started bringing river temperature down into a healthier range for the fishery, Kennedy said, adding that fish should begin to reposition into their more traditional holding areas. Read more of his report, under “Northwest Arkansas.”

The good ol’ sculpin olive and peach jig.
It’s landed many of fish. From whoppers to d***s. And it never fails.
It’s classic. It is consistent.
We tend to reach for the most flashy, gravitate to the loudest, compare what we have with others. Sometimes, (most times) it’s the simplest thing that doesn’t need a bunch of noise. Because, it speaks for itself.
The loudest person in the room usually is compensating and if you’re more concerned with what someone else has got, just water your own grass.
Or pick up a pole and walk a creek.
