G1 vs. G7 BC: Know What Your Number Means

Not all Ballistic Coefficients are created equal.

G1 and G7 are different drag models, meaning the BC number is only meaningful when you know which standard was used.

🔹 G1 BC

* Based on a shorter, flat-base reference projectile
* Commonly used by manufacturers
* Can be more appropriate for flat-base or traditional bullet designs
* More velocity-dependent when applied to modern long-range bullets

🔹 G7 BC

* Based on a long, boat-tail reference projectile
* Much closer to the shape of modern long-range rifle bullets
* Generally provides a more consistent representation of drag across velocity
* Preferred for many modern boat-tail match bullets and long-range applications (Berger Bullets⁠)

THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

Don’t compare a G1 number to a G7 number.

A G1 .600 BC is NOT automatically better than a G7 .300 BC. They are based on different reference standards, so the numbers cannot be compared directly. (Applied Ballistics⁠)

When you’re building a ballistic profile, use the BC model specified by the manufacturer—and make sure your ballistic solver is using the same model.

At long range, the details matter.

🔥 BARREL HEAT & POINT OF IMPACT

A hot barrel can change your point of impact (POI).

As a barrel heats, the steel expands and barrel harmonics can change. The result can be a shift in where your rifle prints—especially during extended strings of fire.

🎯 THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

Don’t just zero a cold rifle. Test your rifle throughout the temperature range you expect to shoot.

Shoot a cold-bore group, then continue firing while recording your round count, barrel temperature, and POI.

Know:
Cold → Warm → Hot

If your rifle moves ½ MOA as the barrel heats, that isn’t a surprise you want to discover during a match or in the field.

Learn where your rifle moves—and build your DOPE around it.

The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate every POI shift.

The goal is to know it, measure it, and account for it.

MIXED HEADSTAMPS = MIXED CASE VOLUMES

Two 6.5 Creedmoor cases can hold the same powder charge but produce different results.

Case manufacturers use different brass thicknesses and internal dimensions. That changes the amount of usable case capacity.

6.5 CREEDMOOR — APPROXIMATE H₂O CAPACITY

• Hornady — ~52–54 gr
• Starline — ~52 gr
• Lapua — ~51–52 gr
• Alpha — ~51 gr
• ADG — ~50 gr
• Peterson — ~50 gr

That difference matters.

If you put the same 42.0 grains of powder into a 54-grain-capacity case and a 50-grain-capacity case, you have not created the same internal ballistic conditions.

Less case volume can mean:
Higher pressure → different velocity → different ES/SD → different point of impact.

THE RULE:

DON’T MIX HEADSTAMPS WHEN DEVELOPING PRECISION AMMUNITION.

Pick one manufacturer and, ideally, one consistent lot of brass.

Sort your brass by:
Headstamp + primer pocket + lot + number of firings.

Then measure your own fired-and-sized cases if you’re chasing maximum consistency.

Consistency of ammunition provides precision.

The shooter controls the accuracy portion of the equation.

Data Of Previous Engagements

When conditions change, your rifle’s point of impact can change with them. A well-maintained D.O.P.E. book gives you a reliable record of how your rifle and ammunition performed in specific conditions—so you can make informed corrections instead of guessing when the shot matters.

A good D.O.P.E. book isn’t just a collection of numbers—it’s a record of what your rifle and ammunition actually did in real conditions.

RECORD THE DETAILS

For every range session or match, document:

🎯 Rifle & Load

• Rifle / barrel
• Cartridge
• Bullet & lot
• Brass & primer
• Powder & charge
• Muzzle velocity
• Zero distance

🌡️ Environmental Conditions

• Temperature
• Pressure / altitude
• Humidity
• Wind speed & direction
• Time and date

📍 Engagement Data

• Target distance
• Elevation
• Wind hold
• Actual impact
• Corrections made
• Position used

DON’T JUST RECORD THE HIT

Record the conditions that produced the hit.

Knowing an elevation solution at 1,000 yards is useful—but knowing the temperature, pressure, velocity, wind, and exact ammunition configuration that produced it makes that data far more valuable.

Your D.O.P.E. book should answer one question:

> *“What did my rifle do the last time I was here—or in conditions like this?”*

The goal isn’t to memorize your data.

The goal is to build a history you can trust.

Record it. Analyze it. Verify it. Then use it.
