Many members of Mountain Lakes Pickleball as well as other area pickleball groups have special memories of time on the courts with Bert Ott. We are saddened to learn that Bert passed away early this morning at her home. Services will be held on Saturday at Townson Rose Funeral Chapel in Hayesville with visitation beginning at 11 AM and services following. Our thoughts are with Bert’s family and friends.

MLP Summer Ladder League Championship
(Submitted to Clay County Progess)

Area pickleball players completed the sixth and final round of the Summer Ladder League at the Clay County Sports Complex on Saturday, August 16.

Twenty-nine players from Hayesville and surrounding towns competed in the final round of the event hosted by Mountain Lakes Pickleball.

In ladder league competition pickleball players self-rate their skill levels and are placed on the “rungs” of a ladder based on that rating. Men and women compete together. Players are matched weekly with adjacent players on the ladder and compete in either three or four games per week. Each player accumulates an individual weekly score to determine their position on the ladder, up or down, for the following week.

Four very skilled players entered round six in the top ladder bracket. After the morning of competition Joe Abaton was named ladder champion. Scott Johnson and Lyndell Holt tied for second place and Connie MacCorkle took fourth place.

League organizer Dave Strothmann noted that Connie MacCorkle was the first woman to place in the top bracket for the final round of competition in all of the prior ladder leagues he has coordinated.

Players also competed for the top cumulative points percentage. Josh Peebles took first place with 95% after winning 230 of 242 total possible points over the six weeks of competition. Chuck Walden took second with 94% and Joe Albaton placed third with 93% points won.

Mountain Lakes Pickleball members thank Dave Strothmann for his work in organizing and coordinating the very competitive and fun event for area players.
