It is also home to the only high school football coaches poll and covers GHSA,GISA and the new GICAA! The Saturday Morning Quarterback was first broadcast in 1981 on WWNS in Statesboro. Conceived and hosted by Tommy Palmer, longtime voice of the sta
tewide Georgia High School Football Scoreboard, the program was moved by Palmer to WPTB in Statesboro and later to WBBK in Blakely. Palmer ended his hosting at the conclusion of the 1989 football season, upon moving back to the Statesboro area. Palmer’s son Jay took over the hosting duties for the 1990 and 1991 seasons on WBBK. Beginning with the 1993 football season, Jay Braswell moved the program from WBBK to Middle Georgia’s WCEH, with Tom Kirk featured as host. With Bruce jioning the show in 1994. From 1995 through 2008, the hosting duties were shared by Bruce Mimbs, Dwight Gatlin and Andy Hill. For much of those 27 years, the show was primarily an in-person discussion with coaches from the local areas, usually broadcast from various local restaurants. Beginning with the 2009 football season, that program format evolved into a new, Thursday evening program called Line-Ups & Size-Ups. In August, 2012, a reformatted SMQB debuted. The program is broadcast live on WQXZ-FM from 9:00 AM ‘till 11:00 AM, featuring a quick rundown of scores from the previous night’s games, moving quickly into a series of brief and lively conversations with numerous coaches from all corners of Georgia. It has quickly become known as “the fastest two hours on radio”, with both over the air and online listeners all across the state. The current Saturday Morning Quarterback is expertly hosted by Bruce Mimbs and Rick Knight. Bruce is starting his 25th year of covering high school sports in middle Georgia! Rick has been a fixture on the radio in middle Georgia for over 2 decades! He his going into his 3rd year as co-host on the Saturday Morning Quarterback.
