Getting stronger for fencing should help you move better, not just make you feel tired.

Strength training in fencing is not about lifting the most.

At Vivo Fencing in Haverhill, Massachusetts, we treat it as smart conditioning that helps you fence better, improving balance, speed, power, stamina, and control right where it counts, on the strip in foil and épée.

In practice, we start with clean mechanics and safe movement patterns, then increase the challenge gradually.

Training is never one size fits all, especially for younger athletes, who should keep it age appropriate and avoid early weight use. We also track progress and build in recovery, because staying healthy is part of getting better.

Getting stronger for fencing should help you move better, not just make you feel tired.

Strength training in fencing is not about getting big or tired.

It is simple conditioning that helps you fence with steadier balance, quicker speed, more power, better stamina, and cleaner control. At Vivo Fencing in Haverhill, we keep it personal: first you learn the movements the right way.

Then you build up gradually with a coach watching your form. For beginners and younger athletes, safety and age-appropriate work come first, plus enough recovery so the body can adapt. If your footwork stays sharp and you feel ready, it is working. If your technique starts to fall apart, it is time to dial it back.

Meet Coach Arpad Horvath. He grew up fencing in Budapest, won junior world and European titles, and became a two time NCAA champion.

Now he coaches here in Haverhill, guiding kids, teens, and adults. He blends European technique with American athletic power to help you fence with skill and joy.

He calls fencing physical chess. You train your legs and your mind, learn timing and smart moves, and build calm under pressure.

New to the sport? In your first weeks you learn stance, footwork, and simple attacks, then try a safe, friendly bout on the strip, the long rectangle where you fence.
