Supporting Our Plaistow Dojo Family ❤️

As many of you may have seen, our Plaistow dojo was struck by a car yesterday and sustained significant damage.

Most importantly, everyone is safe. No students or parents were inside at the time. Thankfully everyone walked away uninjured.

To our Plaistow students and families: Haverhill is always your dojo too, and we can’t wait to see you on the mat❤️🥋Thank you to everyone who has reached out, checked on our team, and offered to help. We are incredibly grateful for this community.

Confidence starts here.

A lot of programs promise confidence. At Ocasio’s True Martial Arts, we have spent 40+ years building a program that intentionally develops it.

Confidence is practiced when a student:

- Speaks loudly even when they feel nervous.

- Performs in front of others even when they are afraid of making a mistake.

-Attempts something difficult, struggles, and chooses to try again.

- Learns to stand tall, make eye contact, advocate for themselves, and encourage the people around them.

Our classes are designed to challenge students physically and emotionally in a supportive environment. We don’t remove every difficult moment. We teach children how to work through those moments and discover what they are capable of.

Our instructors receive ongoing training in childhood development, teaching methods, and how to support different personalities and learning styles. Many of our junior instructors have grown up in our program and now help create that same experience for the next generation.

We are not simply teaching martial arts techniques. We are developing confident, disciplined, resilient young people who carry these skills into school, friendships, sports, and life.

That is what makes our program different.

Our Competition Team ended the summer with an awesome trip to Water Country! ☀️🌊

We had so much fun, and it was the perfect way to celebrate all of their continued hard work and dedication. From extra practices and open mat time to creating forms, performing, and competing in tournaments, this team puts in so much effort all year long.

We are incredibly proud of everything they’ve accomplished and love getting the chance to make memories together outside of the dojo too!

We wanted to share a moment from the dojo that we’re still thinking about. ❤️

The difficulty of our program can sometimes be overlooked in the day-to-day training. You can see the physical challenges like conditioning, sparring, forms, and techniques, but the emotional challenges and personal growth aren’t always as visible. To us, those are the most important parts.

Jaxon was working toward earning his red stripe, the final stripe needed before testing for his new belt. While practicing his form, he faced a big emotional challenge. He was so nervous about performing and using a strong kiai that he didn’t want to continue.

Jaxon stayed after class with our amazing Junior Assistant Instructor, Kohai Ellayna, who patiently worked through his form with him. His dad, who is also a current white belt in our adult program, stepped onto the mat beside him. Together, Dad and Kohai Ellayna continued encouraging Jaxon and didn’t give up on him.

It took time, patience, and a lot of encouragement, but in the end, Jaxon DID IT! 🥋🔥

We always say in the dojo, “YES, I CAN!” Jaxon showed exactly what those words mean. He pushed through the fear, finished his form, and proved to himself that he could do it.

This is the gritty, difficult work where real growth happens. When children face resistance, they need the people around them to help them work through it. Keep believing in them, even when they’re struggling to believe in themselves. When students overcome moments like this, they become stronger and more confident.

We are incredibly proud of you, Jaxon!

A special shoutout to Jaxon’s awesome dad for stepping onto the mat and showing him that he wasn’t alone, and to Kohai Ellayna, who never gave up on him. She worked with Jaxon throughout the belt cycle, spent extra time working on the form and curriculum, tested him, and pushed him to reach the finish line.

This is what our program is all about. ❤️🥋
