I'm Exploring Something New for Athletes!!

(and can use a little help -- see link below)

After nearly 20 years of working with athletes, I've seen many of the same challenges arise again and again:

• Overthinking
• Fear of mistakes
• Pressure and expectations
• Confidence struggles

I've also seen that the skills athletes need to navigate these challenges can be learned.

That's why I'm exploring a new virtual program:

Courage Over Confidence: A Mental Performance Program for Athletes

This program would help athletes learn how to trust their preparation, navigate pressure, manage mind chatter, and compete effectively—even when confidence isn't where they'd like it to be.

I'm currently gathering feedback from athletes, parents, coaches, and others involved in sports as I shape the program.

If you have a few minutes, I'd greatly appreciate your input through this brief questionnaire:

Thank you to everyone who has supported Greenepsych and Courage Over Confidence over the years. I appreciate your help as I explore this next step.

I'm exploring the possibility of offering a small-group mental performance program for athletes based on my Courage Over Confidence framework. The results are consistent -- when people learn how to manage mind chatter by preparing for it, and then knowing what tools can be used to manage it, good th...

Words matter — especially in the moments athletes are struggling most.

This weekend, Dr. Luna Ugrenovic presented at the Philadelphia Coaches Conference on how the language coaches use around mental health referrals can directly impact whether athletes feel supported enough to stay in sport.

The right conversation can reduce stigma, build trust, and remind athletes that asking for help does not mean they don’t belong. Greenepsych was thankful to be part of such an important conference with coaches who care so deeply about the people they coach and the teams they support.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how often athletes are described as “tight,” “in their head,” or “not showing up the same way in competition.”

In many cases, what looks like a confidence issue is actually a nervous system response under pressure.

When the system detects threat, even in a high-performing athlete, it can shift away from fluid ex*****on and toward protection. That can show up as overthinking, hesitation, or feeling disconnected from what they’re fully capable of in practice.

This is where I find it helpful to zoom out from mindset alone and consider what the nervous system may be responding to based on past performance experiences.

EMDR Therapy is one approach I use to help athletes reprocess those experiences so performance feels more available in the present—not just in theory, but in real competitive environments.

What you see on social media: highlights, smiles, perfect days, and big wins.
What you don’t see: exhaustion, constant second-guessing, setbacks, and self-doubt, and the courage to keep showing up anyway.

Behind every post is a student-athlete navigating far more than the scoreboard.

Being a thermostat means taking charge of your environment — not just reading it. The best athletes don’t wait to see how the game feels; they set the tone with their effort, focus, and body language. A thermometer reacts to the moment, but a thermostat responds with intention.

This week, ask yourself: Am I adjusting to the game… or leading it?
