Do not allow yourself to be deceived through flattery...let that man pity himself whose ways always please everybody, for it is a sign that they are of no value, for excellence is of the few. Baltasar Gracian
Everyone enjoys receiving nice compliments. It makes you feel good about yourself when others compliment something about you, whether it is your looks, your clothes, your achievements, or anything else. But you should always remember to take those statements for what they’re worth. Honest, sincere compliments are always welcome; excessive, insincere compliments are simply flattery and are always accompanied by some underlying agenda or alternative motive.
While the agenda behind flattery is not always malicious, many times it will be, especially when it is meant to influence you in some way. There is a big difference between light-hearted flattery or flirting, and conscious manipulation. The latter is what you should be wary of in your dealings with others.
Be careful that you don’t allow yourself to be manipulated by flattering words. If you find that everyone always likes everything that you do, you can be sure that someone is not being honest with you. It is virtually impossible to please all the people all the time. In fact, you shouldn’t even try to please everyone all the time.
You should take the praise of others, just as you take their criticism, with a grain of salt. This does not mean that you should not enjoy a sincere compliment or learn from the sincere critique that others may offer you. It simply means that you must be able to discern the genuine, heartfelt compliments from those which have an unseen agenda.
Use both to gain insight into yourself and those around you. But do not let them inflate or deflate your self-esteem or self-confidence. Be who you are, work your strategy, and don’t worry about the opinions of others.
