" A skilled hawk hides its talons."

A skilled hawk hides its talons is a metaphor often associated with samurai culture and mindset.

It means that a truly capable or powerful person does not constantly show off their strength or abilities. Instead, like a hawk that keeps its sharp claws tucked away until needed, a skilled individual stays calm, modest, and unassuming revealing their true power only at the right moment.

THE FALL OF THE TAIRA CLAN occurred during the Genpei War (1180–1185), when their power was undermined by military defeats and the loss of support.

After some early successes, the Taira established strongholds along the Inland Sea, relying on their naval superiority. However, the Minamoto commander Yosh*tsune launched a decisive campaign against them. In 1184, he defeated Taira forces at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani by carrying out a surprise attack from the rear. This defeat forced the Taira to retreat by sea, losing many of their leaders.

The next blow came at Yashima (1185), where Yosh*tsune again used the element of surprise. The Taira were forced to abandon their positions and withdraw to their final stronghold at Hikoshima.

The decisive moment came in the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185). Despite their experience at sea, the Taira were outnumbered and faced betrayal from within their ranks. The turning point came when the tide shifted and the enemy learned the location of the emperor aboard one of their ships. The Taira fleet was destroyed.

Realizing defeat was inevitable, many members of the clan, including nobles and women, committed mass su***de. The child emperor also perished. The few survivors were either killed or captured.

The complete destruction of the Taira clan brought the Genpei War to an end. Their name disappeared from Japan’s political life, and power passed to the Minamoto, who established a military government—the shogunate.

Do not allow yourself to be deceived through flattery...let that man pity himself whose ways always please everybody, for it is a sign that they are of no value, for excellence is of the few. Baltasar Gracian

Everyone enjoys receiving nice compliments. It makes you feel good about yourself when others compliment something about you, whether it is your looks, your clothes, your achievements, or anything else. But you should always remember to take those statements for what they’re worth. Honest, sincere compliments are always welcome; excessive, insincere compliments are simply flattery and are always accompanied by some underlying agenda or alternative motive.

While the agenda behind flattery is not always malicious, many times it will be, especially when it is meant to influence you in some way. There is a big difference between light-hearted flattery or flirting, and conscious manipulation. The latter is what you should be wary of in your dealings with others.

Be careful that you don’t allow yourself to be manipulated by flattering words. If you find that everyone always likes everything that you do, you can be sure that someone is not being honest with you. It is virtually impossible to please all the people all the time. In fact, you shouldn’t even try to please everyone all the time.

You should take the praise of others, just as you take their criticism, with a grain of salt. This does not mean that you should not enjoy a sincere compliment or learn from the sincere critique that others may offer you. It simply means that you must be able to discern the genuine, heartfelt compliments from those which have an unseen agenda.

Use both to gain insight into yourself and those around you. But do not let them inflate or deflate your self-esteem or self-confidence. Be who you are, work your strategy, and don’t worry about the opinions of others.
