Why I Do Application Only
People ask why I make prospective clients apply instead of just booking sessions. Fair question. Here is the honest answer.
Early in my career I said yes to everyone. Some of those people did not want coaching, they wanted supervision.
They wanted to be entertained for an hour, and when results required something from them on the other six days, they were out. I was working harder than they were, and nobody was happy.
So now there is a filter. It takes five minutes and it tells me two things: what you are actually trying to build, and whether you are ready to own your part. If the answer is no, I would rather tell you that on day zero than take your money for four months.
The result is a small roster of people who are genuinely in it. That makes me a better coach for every one of them, because I have the capacity to actually think about their programming during the week. The filter is not about status. It is about both of us not wasting a year.

How to Actually Progress a Lift
The reason most people plateau is not genetics. It is that they have no rule for adding load. Here is one you can use tomorrow.
Pick a rep range, say 8 to 10. Start with a weight you can do 8 clean reps with, leaving one in the tank. Each week, add reps at the same weight until you hit 10 on all your sets. Once you do, add the smallest available increment, usually 5 pounds upper body, 10 lower, and drop back to 8. Repeat.
That is it. Double progression. It works for years.
Two rules that make it work. Log every set. Weight, reps, and how it felt on a scale of one to ten. Without the log you are guessing, and guessing is how people lift the same weight for a year.
And when you stall twice at the same weight, do not push harder. Cut the load by ten percent, rebuild for three weeks, and you will pass the old number.
Progress is not a feeling. It is a written record that goes up.

DAY 22 PHILOSOPHY

Strength Is Built From the Inside Out
Everybody wants to talk about the outside. The number on the scale, the shirt fitting differently, the before and after. Fine. Those things happen. But they are the byproduct, not the build.
What is actually being built is on the inside. The ability to do a hard thing when nobody is watching. The habit of keeping your word to yourself. The nervous system learning that discomfort is information, not danger. The quiet
confidence of someone who has proven, hundreds of times, that they finish. That is why clients tell me the changes showed up at work and at home before they showed up in the mirror. They are not imagining it. You cannot practice discipline for an hour and then leave it in the gym.
Beyond workouts and macros: resilience, discipline, showing up when life is heavy.
Train the inside. The outside follows, and it stays.

DAY 21 CLIENT STORY

Eleven Years and Still Going
Eleven years. In person and over Zoom. Through multiple injuries, none of which happened with me, all of which we worked around.
"I have worked out with Wil in person and over Zoom for 11 years. He does a great job working around
whatever injuries I have experienced in other activities and keeps the workout interesting."
Two things I want to point out.
First, eleven years is not a testimonial, it is evidence. Programs that get people hurt do not last a decade. Coaches who bore people do not either.
Second, working around injuries is most of the job. Nobody arrives at forty five with a clean history. A tweaked knee, a cranky low back, a shoulder that does not love overhead work. The skill is not pushing through it. It is finding the version of the movement that still builds strength while the tissue heals, and knowing when to reintroduce the original.
If you have been told to just rest, or just push through, there is usually a third option.
Application only. Link in bio.

DAY 20 PRACTICAL TIP

Five Mistakes I Fix in Almost Every New Client
Twenty two years of assessments and the same five things come up constantly.
Program hopping. Six weeks in, they switch because progress felt slow. Nothing works when nothing gets
finished. Give a program twelve weeks before you judge it.
No load progression. Same weight, same reps, for months, and then confusion about why nothing changed. Add weight, reps, or a set. Write it down so you know.
Skipping the warm up, then wondering about the shoulder. Ten minutes of easy work and ramp up sets is the cheapest injury insurance available.
Training to failure on everything. Grinding max effort every set wrecks recovery and makes the next three sessions worse. Leave one or two reps in reserve on most of your work.
Ignoring the legs. Half of DFW is training chest and arms and skipping the thing that actually determines how they move at seventy. Squat, hinge, carry.
None of this is advanced. Fixing these five is worth more than any program you could buy.
