Mixed set of emotions today, anger, sadness, but yet happiness.
Anger, in the way that we were 100% not prepared for the rain and weather. We are not a power football team and haven’t been. We have been a balanced team with the ability to run the ball outside the tackles, and pass the ball. Today with the nasty weather it makes it very hard to throw the ball. We tried to during warm-ups, but with no grip it is hard to do. Knew we would have issues snapping the ball and had to change that as well. In the second half we went to a jumbo set and saw some life out of it. These boys never ran those plays but making success out of them was good to see, but in the end it was not enough.
Sadness is that it is over for us. We have worked so hard to win and make the playoffs. I feel that every practice we get stronger and better. It is also sad to be losing such great players that I know I will miss dearly. When you coach kids like these you get so close to them and they feel like your own. I wish them well next year as they move to Middle School. I know that all of them are players and I expect to see them as leaders on the field.
Happiness is that we did so well against all odds against us. We took a team that was 1-7 last year and taught them to play to the best of their abilities. 5-3 is a big step up and these 5th graders that will be moving up next year will already know what we expect out of them. The bar will be set higher next year.
I am Proud of all these boys, as they make the passion I have for football continue to come out of me every day. 6th graders, good luck on your journey next year. I wish you all the best, and I am sure I will see you around Haskell. 5th graders you better be ready as next year we are going to do way more. We are going to start earlier than we have before. We will have camps, and sign ups will be early next year. I would say before school is let out.
Parents thank you for all you do as well. I know the long practices, and late nights take a toll sometimes. But those are the things we do for our kids to make them better.
If you need anything let me know I always have my phone on me.
Until next season,
Coach Ed
