The hardest thing I did in my first engineering internship was learn robotics.
Even though the expectations were minimal and I felt the goal was attainable, I had to learn a new way of thinking in three months.
What I quickly realized was that robotics was a fun system to learn. I had the resources of an internship at a Mechanical compnay so I was able to build something visible fast.
With those small gains my mentors and managers felt comfortable with the new requests I had and sent me help by way of another intern to do the programming.
The teamwork and the goal orientation led to finishing my first robotics project in three months.
Now I get to take on new projects with confidence. I even became a robotics contractor before graduating. If you can focus on visible work, you can gain expertise even if your day job is being a student.
