Kansas Lady Nets

Kansas Lady Nets Long standing Women’s developmental basketball program based out of Emporia, KS and surrounding areas Character and Competitiveness creates that!

The Kansas Lady Nets is a long standing developmental basketball program that prides ourselves in creating female ball players of high character and ability. This basketball team was developed out of a need for young ladies to have increased skill and individual abilities exposed through hard work and effort. Basketball can and should be a challenging, fun, and team-minded sport. We strive to teac

h strong skill development to achieve a genuine "TEAM" concept. We don't recruit "superstars", we develop them. This program is not for everyone. You must leave your "Want To" at the door to the gym and bring your "Will Do" on to the court. Love the Game, and Fun will follow! With the Kansas Lady Nets, you will not just be coached, you will be taught to be your best!

Micheal Allen Watkins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished community member, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, at the age of 74. Mike was born July 30, 1950 and raised in Illinois, but he made his home in Hartford, Kansas, where he spent the majority of his life, deeply committed to his family, his community, and his faith.

Above all, Mike was devoted to his family. He shared a powerful and enduring love with his wife Colleen for 55 years. Their partnership was the foundation of a warm and loving home, and Mike’s belief that “love could conquer all” was evident in the way he lived his life. He took great pride in creating and upholding family traditions, especially at Christmas, a season he cherished. It is only fitting that he passed away on Christmas Eve, surrounded by the love he had so freely given throughout his life.

For many years, Coach Mike was the heart and soul of the Lady Nets basketball team, where he served as founder, head coach, mentor, and friend to countless young athletes. His passion for the game was only rivaled by his devotion to teaching young people the four C’s character, competitiveness, confidence and competence as well as the values of teamwork, integrity and personal growth. Mike’s love for sports extended to his own children, all of whom were talented athletes themselves. Whether at the gym, on the field, or in the stands, he was always cheering on his family and others in their pursuits.

Mike’s contributions extended beyond his family and personal interests. He dedicated much of his life to helping young people become better individuals, founding and leading the Athletic Christian Team at Hartford Middle and High School. His guidance, support, and unwavering faith made a lasting impact on generations of students who carried his lessons with them throughout their lives.

Outside of his work with young athletes, Mike had a deep appreciation for antiques and enjoyed spending his free time attending auctions, often with his wife or one of his children by his side. His love for collecting was just one of many ways he found joy in life's simple pleasures.

Mike (aka Paw Paw, Pappy, Pops) was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Betty Watkins. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Colleen, and his brothers, Elbe (Susan) Watkins, Stan (Sue) Watkins, Kevin Watkins, Jeff (Leslie) Watkins, his children Brandon (Bridget) Watkins, Wendee (Jeff) Brungardt, Ryan (Tara) Watkins, Mindy Watkins, Jodi (John) VanGundy, and his 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all who were the light of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service to others that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Mike was known for his big heart, his “Can’t Never Did Anything” attitude and the love he freely gave to those around him, usually with a big hug and kiss. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the family traditions that will endure.

A Visitation will be held Friday, January 3rd at Hartford Community Center from 4 to 7pm. Celebration of Life services will be held at Hartford High School in the Old Gym on Saturday January 4th at 1 pm. Burial service to follow at Chicago Mound Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hartford High School towards Coach Mike’s Character Award.

If you have Lady Nets gear or Coach Mike coalition shirts, please wear them to the visitation. We want to rep Coach Mike.

Finished 2nd place in the “Independence Day Jamboree” Tournament in Overland Park, KS this weekend with no subs. Came very close to beating the #1 seed in the last game. We fought and competed every minute of that game, so we know we are improving and competing at a high level with just enough to even play a basketball game…which is something we can hold our heads high about. Super proud of these girls! Only a few tournaments left this summer! 💪🏀❤️
