NEWFLASH!! Anyone going upland bird hunting and/or fishing around the Pierre SD / National Grasslands, and is looking for a terrific place to stay just outside of town, you need to check this out. A friend sent this to me today and I thought I would share it with all Drahthaar owners. Please keep in mind this isn't so much about me, but about my Drahthaars, and relevant to all Drahthaars owners. It was written by a well know outdoor writer, and pubished in Point Dog Journal many years ago. I can remember saying these words as if it were yesterday, and they still stir feelings of enormous joy and pride. Hug your Drahthaars today!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jason Dean and Chad Cliburn from Texas. Both 'hot shots' scored a South Dakota Grand Slam on opening weekend at the Krull Lodge. Determination, skill, and lots of luck are necessary to accomplish this prize. Well Done Boys!!

It was such a pleasure to come to the Krull Lodge. What a great experience for this Texas boy. Birds I had only heard about in the grouse, prairie chicken and partridge.

As I mentioned I didn’t even know what any of them even really looked like before coming to South Dakota. Once I learned about Chad Cliburn’s Grand Slam I knew I had to work my tail off to get the same. Once I shot my first ‘Hun’ I was half way there…but not before shooting four more Hun’s of our group’s total of six, meaning I shot 5 of 6 of them.

So now understanding more about what the grouse walk I was determined to walk as far as I needed to…which from what I have learned from Jim, could have been a walk to Illinois!!!! But we walked about a mile and one single bird popped up, and as you mentioned…I looked at my group and most of them had their guns down..heads down…but not me!!!....i was as poised as I could be, arms getting tired…then it popped up right in front of me and in a flash I ‘cartwheeled’ him!!! George walked over to grab the bird and see what it was. He said ‘IT’S A SHARPTAIL!!!’….I had to ask ‘Is that a grouse?’…..and Jim said ‘YEP!!!’…then the guys all started yelling and cheering about my achievement. WHAT A DAY!!!!
