Happy New Year to everyone!

As we welcome January, we also recognize it as National Mentoring Youth Month. This month highlights the critical role mentoring plays in shaping the future of our youth. It is a time to raise awareness about the importance of mentorship in society and to celebrate its positive impact on individuals and communities.

Let’s continue to support and inspire the next generation through guidance, encouragement, and meaningful connections.

As children, many of us fondly remember the excitement and anticipation that filled the days leading up to Christmas. The wait seemed endless, but the joy of the holiday season always arrived, leaving us with cherished memories that last a lifetime.

This year, Teach As Many is partnering with our community to brighten the holiday season for a child in need. We are providing clothing, hygiene supplies, and toys to a 10-year-old boy in third grade who could greatly benefit from your support. He loves the outdoors, enjoys board games, and is fascinated by anything that flies. His favorite color is red, and he is in need of jackets, socks, and additional clothing.

If you would like to contribute, we are accepting donations through December 20th, 2024.

Donations can be made via Cash App at $TeachAsMany1, or by contacting us to arrange for a pickup of items. You may also reach out to us via email at [email protected]

Amanda’s Scholarship Endowment was created in memory of Amanda Welling D***s, a student at Porter-Gaud School who died of cancer when she was 14. After her death in 1995, her mother used money saved for Amanda’s education to create a fund to honor Amanda’s love of learning and strength of character. An annual, renewable award is made to a student from Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester counties.

Average award: $5,000

Criteria for eligibility

Applicants must live in Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester counties.

Application process and schedule

Applications can be completed online beginning mid-January. Each applicant will only complete one application and the online system will automatically pair you with scholarships for which you are eligible. The deadline for all applications to be submitted, including letters of recommendation, is mid-March. All applicants will be contacted regarding their application status by early July. Specific deadlines can be found on our scholarship portal each year, which can be accessed through the “Apply” button on our Scholarships for Current High School Seniors page.

The PlayHouse Project is a program designed to teach children the pride and joy of homeownership and is a joint event among 5 Habitat affiliates in the tri-county region. The event will be held Saturday, December 2nd at Lowe's Distribution Center on Daniel Island. Teams will design and build a playhouse for children of Habitat homeowners and other families in need. Each play house is a pre-cut kit that will take 6 hours to build and paint with the help of 10 volunteers. At the end of the build day, teams will present their completed playhouse to the children as Christmas gifts. Shhhhh! The children do not know until they are presented with their playhouse.

To Apply for a playhouse, please scan the QR code on the attachment below. Applications are due September 9th, 2024.

Down below is a scholarship opportunity. You can find more information at palmettopromise.org.

The ESA is a new state scholarship of 6,000 for S'Cs K-12 students from low to moderate income families.

What is an ESA?
ESAs allow parents to apply for eligible students to receive the state portion of education funds (or in the South Carolina case, a portion of state general funds) into a personal, parent-controlled account. Parents are then empowered to customize an education experience that meets the individual needs of their child, using their account to pay for approved services like tuition, therapy, tutoring, textbooks, and more.
