Today’s feature is a classic Wi******er Model 70 Pre-64, chambered in the legendary .375 H&H Magnum and dating to approximately 1955.

The Pre-64 Model 70 has long held an important place among classic American sporting ri**es, and the .375 H&H Magnum configuration is particularly sought after. Its controlled-round-feed action, substantial build and powerful chambering made it a serious sporting r***e.

This example retains strong metal finish, clean receiver and bottom metal, sharp stock checkering and well-preserved walnut. The 25-inch barrel and traditional iron sights complete its classic configuration.

At roughly 70 years old, finding a Pre-64 Model 70 in .375 H&H with this level of preservation makes for an especially noteworthy example of Wi******er’s sporting-r***e heritage.

BEHIND THE GUN | What’s the Action?

Barrels and walnut usually get the attention, but the action is the mechanical heart of a sporting gun.

It’s the central assembly that contains or supports important operating and firing components and connects the barrels with the stock.

That’s why you’ll hear descriptions such as boxlock action, sidelock action and hammer action.

Once you understand the action, you begin understanding how the gun itself was designed.

🔨 Gun of the Day — Browning Superposed Grade I Superlight

Today’s feature is a particularly desirable Belgian Browning Superposed Grade I Superlight, built in 1969 and chambered in 20 gauge.

🔹 English straight-grip walnut stock with long tang
🔹 Approx. 5 lbs. 14 oz.

What sets the Superlight apart is exactly what its name suggests. At under six pounds, this 20 gauge was built as a remarkably lively, fast-handling field gun. The English straight grip and slender forearm give it a very different feel and appearance from the more commonly encountered pistol-grip Superposed.

This example is also exceptionally well preserved, retaining strong barrel blue, crisp checkering, attractive walnut and excellent wood-to-metal fit.

The combination of Belgian manufacture, 20 gauge, Superlight configuration, straight grip, 26½-inch barrels and sub-six-pound weight makes this a standout example of one of Browning’s most distinctive field configurations.

BEHIND THE GUN | Boxlock vs. Sidelock

These two words describe fundamentally different approaches to the lockwork of traditional break-action guns.

In a boxlock, much of the firing mechanism is housed within the action body.

In a traditional sidelock, the lock mechanisms are mounted on plates fitted into the sides of the action.

Neither word by itself tells you whether a gun is “good” or “bad.”

They’re different designs—and understanding the difference is part of learning to read a fine gun.

Today’s feature is an exceptionally well-preserved Wi******er Model 70 Pre-64 Featherweight, chambered in the classic .30-06 Springfield and dating to approximately 1959.

The Featherweight was Wi******er’s lighter, handier version of the legendary Model 70. Combined with the .30-06 chambering and 22-inch barrel, this configuration represents the classic American sporting r***e exceptionally well.

What really distinguishes this example is its condition. The r***e remains factory original with nearly all of its original metal finish, sharp checkering, excellent wood-to-metal fit, and very little evidence of handling or use.

Original Pre-64 Model 70s are always noteworthy, but a factory-original Featherweight from 1959 in this level of condition is an especially appealing piece of Wi******er history.
