I learned this the hard way when I was dieting myself for a figure competition. My diet was so limited it was ridiculous 🤯

NOTHING sweet, not even from fruit?! I literally would dream about desserts and I would watch food network and literally drool. I started collecting all the goodies that I didn’t get to eat for 3 months in my freezer with the thought of eating it after the show.

Welp… I definitely did that. Can I just tell you the physical pain it caused, doubled over in pain for 2-3 months post comp. Not to mention I ballooned. Ugh.

I felt like šŸ’©ā€¦ But I learn a lesson.

DON’T MAKE A FOOD FORBIDDEN (unless you have an allergy) sometimes just knowing you can have it lessens the appeal.

And if you’re thinking, ā€œYeah, okay Jaime… but if it’s in the house, I’m eating it,ā€ I get it.

A couple things that can help:
1. Buy it less often. You don’t have to ban it, but you also don’t need it available 24/7.
2. Have it after a proper meal - ideally protein and some fiber, like veggies and/or fruit.

You may find you don’t want it as much anymore. Or maybe you still have it, but you eat less and actually enjoy it without feeling out of control.

Either way, that’s a win. ā¤ļø

Ok, I lied. There’re more…

ALSO, good news is you won’t even get bulky from lifting weights. Not accidentally. That takes years of very intentional training, eating, and consistency most people are not casually stumbling into.

Don’t get me wrong, feeling confident in your body is a big deal. But carrying your groceries, getting up off the floor, playing with your kids or grandkids, and trusting your body to keep up with your life? That’s the real flex.

Trust me when I say this. I’ve seen that mindset shift happen so many times..

Almost 3 years later, I still think about this.
Karen was 80 when we started working together, and at the beginning she wasn’t able to push her hips back into a hip hinge. So that’s where we started.

No fancy exercises. No complicated plan. Just slowly working on getting that bum back so she could start strengthening her glutes, hamstrings, and all the muscles that help us move well.
And yes, she was very proud of her ā€œtookusā€ šŸ˜‰

I think sometimes people hear ā€œstrength trainingā€ and imagine heavy weights, intense workouts, or needing to already be fit before they begin.

But this is strength training too:
* Learning how to move your body with more confidence.
* Building strength from your own starting point.
* Doing something simple and repeatable that supports your future self.

Because as we age, keeping our strength is not just about fitness. It’s about quality of life. Independence. Getting up and down. Carrying things. Going places. Doing the things we love for as long as possible.

And it doesn’t have to be much to matter.

Big high five to Karen and a reminder to all of us that it is never too late, and it is never too small, to start ā¤ļø

I have definitely had times where I had fear. Fear to push myself. Fear of injury.

When I first started lifting, the weights felt intimidating. I would think ā€œthis is heavy enoughā€ without really understanding what it felt like to truly push myself.

As I got more seasoned, I realized I was my limiting factor and that I could change that slowly and progressively.

I also got injured years ago by a trainer that didn’t know what they were doing. 🫣 I broke ribs and separated cartilage from my sternum after dropping 80lbs on my chest. For years after that, benching felt uncomfortable.

Later, I realized it was my brain trying to protect me.

When I finally worked with someone who knew what they were doing, I slowly rebuilt trust in myself. I went from pressing 60lb dbs to 90!!!! Little by little, I pushed my comfort zone.

Fear can feel very real, but so can progress. Sometimes, having someone support you and remind you that you’re capable of more than you think can be life changing.. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

The number on the scale can tell you something, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. It doesn’t tell you how strong you’re getting, how much easier daily life feels, how your bones are doing, how your joints feel, or how much more confidence you have when you realize your body can do hard things.

Lets not forget this. ā¤ļø

We all have seasons when we don’t feel strong or confident in our own bodies. Healing through those takes both courage and support. And that's perfectly fine.
