Couldn’t agree more. Lots of clubs here playing down in order to win by 50 or 60 points. What are we teaching? Playing a tournament and going 4-0 while outscoring your opponents 280-50 teaches our kids nothing but disrespect for the other teams and kids. It’s great if your team is that good, play your level or even play up. But don’t play down just for the highlights and championships.

Are we killing real development?👇👇👇

Today’s young athletes are often more focused on the spotlight, the mixtapes, the highlight reels, and the perfect photos than on truly playing the game well. It’s become less about effort, sacrifice, and supporting your teammates, and more about how you look while doing it. But sports are about so much more than just image. They are about building character, learning to work as a team, pushing through challenges, and growing both on and off the field.

Like Jamal Crawford said, we have to put out the right things for the next generation of athletes; otherwise, we are hurting the game and the overall culture of sports. We owe it to young athletes, as parents and coaches, to teach them how to play the right way: with effort, respect, teamwork, and sacrifice. These values stay with them for the rest of their lives. Let’s bring the focus back to what truly matters: the game, the team, and the lifelong lessons sports teach us.

Gino Smith basketball….

So true. Coaches should never bench a kid for making a mistake. Even NBA players make mistakes and miss shots. This is the sign of a poor coach. A good coach continues to coach and help that player understand his mistake and improve. However, lack of hustle and missing assignments lets the team down. We talk about team players all the time. Be a team coach and coach the kids to be fearless and have the courage to take a shot. Fear of shooting for the risk of benching inhibits growth. Too many youth programs teach the wrong aspects of the game. That’s a coaching error, not a players error.

As we build PNWHustle, I continue to support school and club programs I believe in and those that have values I believe our kids need. Proud of this group of kids I coached in the Nelson Youth Basketball Program. To start, we are a team of four 4th graders and five 3rd graders, playing in a 4th grade tournament. This is our first tournament together and we’ve only had 3 practices. We dropped a close first game then battled out a tough win in game two. On day two we had the team beat but one fourth grader injured his shooting hand enough that he couldn’t return and our big man GMoney fouled out with 17min to go. Left with mostly 3rd graders we dropped the game 24-21. Due to other upsets and point differentials, we qualified for the championship back against the same team we played just an hour before. This time we only had 6 players to start due to injury and this time one kid rolled his ankle and a 4th grader hit the floor hard enough he couldnt return. So proud of our remaining players as they wouldn’t quit and finished the game with only four players. We lost 35-19 in the championship. Not bad for the underdogs playing mostly a division up and battling injuries, a small roster, and giving up quite a bit of size. 2nd place and a birth to the end of year state tournament. Not a bad start to the season. At PNWHustle, as you can see we don’t only want wins, we want heart, courage, and determination. For these attributes, look no further than Nelson 4th Grade Black. We dont stack our teams, we work with the kids directly to build better players. Stacking to win and blowout others at an elementary level doesnt teach basketball.
