One bad night of sleep can slow your reaction time to a level comparable with being legally drunk. A sleep deprived brain processes visual information slower, which drags down your entire see, process, and act loop. That is why tired athletes misread plays, make more mistakes, and get injured more often.

Here is the part nobody tells athletes. Travel, nerves, and early games will wreck your sleep sometimes, and you are not helpless when it happens. Nothing replaces real sleep, but two things can help your brain show up ready. First, ask your doctor about higher dose creatine on game day morning, since research links it to cognitive support and sharper decision making when you are sleep deprived. Second, do a neural warm-up before the game. Warming up your muscles while your visual system is still asleep is leaving performance behind. Wake up your eyes and brain so your processing speed is ready at the first whistle.

Kohli became the best by training something nobody else was training. 🧠🏏

Here’s the part they don’t teach in the nets:

Your brain runs ~0.1 seconds behind reality. By the time you “see” a 145kph delivery, the real ball is already ~4 metres closer than the one your eyes are showing you.

Which means no batter in history — including Kohli — has ever truly watched the ball onto the bat. It’s physically impossible.

So how does he do it?

His eyes don’t follow the ball. Eye-tracking research on elite batters shows their gaze jumps AHEAD to the bounce point before the ball arrives. His brain reads the bowler’s wrist, seam, and load-up, then runs a live forecast of the delivery — handing him the future about 0.2 seconds early.

His reaction time? Nearly ordinary.
His prediction engine? World-class.

And here’s the good news: reflexes barely improve with training. Prediction improves fast. Occlusion drills, cue reading, gaze anchoring — this is trainable at any level.

You don’t need faster hands. You need an earlier brain.

Your brain processes sound in about 10 milliseconds. A visual signal takes roughly ten times longer to register. That is the real reason almost every sprint race starts with a gun instead of a light. Sound reaches your motor system faster, so athletes get off the line quicker.

Formula One flips that on its head. Drivers get no sound cue at all. They stare at five lights and must launch the instant those lights go out, and the timing is randomized so nobody can guess the release. It is one of the hardest pure reaction tests in all of sport.

Here is what matters for every athlete, coach, and sports parent reading this: your baseline reaction speed has a genetic ceiling, but your in-game reflexes do not. Anticipation and visual processing speed are trainable skills, and they are what separate athletes who react from athletes who arrive early.

The same eye test police run at a DUI stop is the one I use on elite athletes, and it exposes more than alcohol. It's called smooth pursuit, and it measures how well your eyes follow a moving target. Alcohol breaks that system. So do concussions, fatigue, and untrained visual tracking.

The difference is what shows up. Impairment creates a rhythmic jerk called nystagmus. A trainable weakness shows up as your eyes falling behind the ball, then snapping forward to catch up. That catch-up movement is why a fastball looks like it jumps on you at the plate.

Here's the part most athletes never hear: smooth pursuit is a skill. Sports vision training can build it the same way you build speed or strength. Record yourself tracking a slow moving target. If your eyes stutter or lag, that's not bad genetics. That's an untrained system.
