💙 Nonverbal Awareness Day 💙
After more than 45 years of teaching swimming, I have had the incredible privilege of teaching so many children who are nonverbal. And I can honestly say that some of the most powerful lessons I have ever learned have come from them.
I’ve learned that not speaking does not mean they have nothing to say.
I’ve watched children communicate with their eyes, their smiles, their hands, their movements, their expressions, and sometimes with a simple moment of trust. I’ve learned to slow down, pay attention, and listen in a different way.
There have been children who initially wouldn’t get in the water, wouldn’t look at me, or wouldn’t allow me to get close. And then, sometimes after weeks or months of patience and repetition, something changes. They trust me. They get in. They learn a skill. They smile. And I know exactly what they are saying without a single word.
Those moments stay with me. ❤️
As a swim instructor, I also know how incredibly important this is when it comes to water safety. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills — including children who communicate differently.
I don’t teach a child based on the words they can or cannot say. I teach the child in front of me. I learn their language. I earn their trust. And I celebrate every single accomplishment, no matter how small it may seem to someone else.
To all the nonverbal children I have taught, and to the families who have trusted me with them: you have taught me far more than you will ever know. 💙
Your voice matters.
Your communication matters.
Your accomplishments matter.
YOU matter.
Today, let’s remember to listen beyond the words. 💙
