The 5th Annual Hamtramck Stadium Juneteenth Celebration partners are proud to announce this year’s keynote speaker: Dorian Hairston. Dorian is a poet educator, and former college baseball player. He is author of Pretend the Ball is Named Jim Crow: The Story of Josh Gibson, a collection of poems that show us the ways baseball reflects society at the time from race to class to gender. Hairston explores the Black American experience through Negro League legend catcher, Joshua Gibson.

Dorian Hairston visits us from Kentucky. Make sure to catch his speech, and the rest of the exciting program, on at 11am on Friday, June 19th at Historic Hamtramck Stadium (3201 Dan St, Hamtramck, MI).

Hamtramck Stadium joins Greenfield Village to bring a Historic tribute game in the play style of late 1800s baseball! Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium Founder and Chair, Gary Gillette, organized the panel that will speak on Negro League history prior. Hamtramck Parks Conservancy Director of Baseball, Mike Wilson, formed the team that will compete as the Pythian Base Ball Club against the Olympic Base Ball Club, as a tribute to the first documented in*******al baseball game in the country.

This past weekend, Historic Hamtramck Stadium welcomed attendees of Michigan Historic Preservation Network’s 46th Annual Conference for an off-site tour titled "Rooted in Major Negro League Baseball". Baseball historian, and founder and chair of the Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium, Gary Gillette, presented a comprehensive history of the venue as the Grand Trunk Western line train rolled by similar to how it would have in the 1930's.

Participants also learned about the historic designation process from Architectural Historian, Rebecca Binno Savage, and about the current activities and future plans at the Stadium from Hamtramck Parks Conservancy Executive Director, Thomas Habitz.

Thank you to site tour sponsor Kathleen Wendler, and the attendees of this session!

To support the preservation of history at Hamtramck Stadium, donations are accepted at hamtramckparks.com (for maintenance and operation) and at hamtramckstadium.org (for history education).

In 2019, Jack White and his mom, Teresa Gillis, took part in a charity baseball match at Historic Hamtramck Stadium that helped pave the way for its renovation.

Our heartfelt condolences to Jack and his family today on the loss of his mother.

Farewell, Mrs. Gillis.
We will remember. 🕊️
