GIRLS RULE! Last week Vicki Hineline defeated Kristen Armacost to win not her first, but her second Waffle tournament of the season. This moves her up into fourth place in the overall standings. Norm Gifford, who has been bowling well lately, had to settle for third place, defeating Dave Richardson in the consolation match.
It was GIRL POWER again last week, as Colleen David was the high qualifier. She will face off against another female opponent, Theresa Huntington in the first round. Frank Schreibman, currently third in the points race behind daughter Sam, qualified second, and will battle Ed Sible of Sible Masonry. Norm Gifford turned in another solid performance, and will bowl Scott Phillips, and finally, Rick Riley, powered by a fine 169 scratch game, will will duel Jeremy Brown.
Greg Johnson continues to lead the points race by a wide margin, but his lead is shrinking. Can anyone catch this juggernaut? Did he peak too soon? We'll find out in a few weeks.
For those who are wondering, the rules are as follows:
1. For qualifying, the handicap is 90% of 150 - average for the first four positions, and pins over average (for positions 5-8). Tiebreakers are total pinfall for the three games.
2. Eight bowlers qualify each week, regardless of the number of entries. The handicap is 90% of 150 - average. The competition is head to head, with the higher seed winning all ties, so there are no rolloffs. Bowlers are re-seeded after each round, with the highest remaining seed bowling the lowest, and so on.
3. Prizes are as follows:
1st - $35 paid immediately
2nd - $20 paid immediately
3rd - $15 paid immediately
4th - $10 paid immediately
5th - $5 deducted from entry fee the following week (or paid in cash if bowler qualifies)
6th - $3 same as 5th
7th - $2 same as 5th
8th - $0
High qualifier $5 bonus.
All qualifiers receive a free entry for that week, which means that 27 bowlers is the break even point. Currently, there are 24 bowlers who regularly bowl in the tournament. Unfortunately several bowlers have dropped out. so the tournament is running a deficit this season. Next season, only a $25 prize will be guaranteed, but will increase by $5 for every entry over 25.
Bowlers accumulate points toward the end of the season. For the last week, a bowler is awarded on point for every pin over their average, so anything can and has happened in years past. That's why it's important to make it every week you can, and bowl your best, however only the top 30 weeks are counted, so that bowlers may miss up to four weeks with no penalty.
One point is awarded for entry, one for each games where a bowler attains 90% of his/her average, and one for each game hitting his/her average. Another point is awarded for hitting 90% of a bowler's average for set, and an additional point for hitting average for the set. Another point is also awarded for hitting average all three games.
Additionally, bowlers receive points for qualifying. Top qualifier earns 5 points, 2nd earns 4, 3rd earns 3, 4th earns 2, and 5th-8th earns 1. Finally, the winner each week receives 10 pts, 2nd 8, 3rd 6, then it's 5 4 3 2 1. This is how the points leaders are determined.
Good luck to all bowlers tonight!
