Year-round youth sports specialization may leave kids repeating the same movement patterns without building the broader physical foundation they need, and going too hard on the same movement patterns over and over can increase stress on the body, potentially limiting development and raising the risk of overuse injuries.
Kids benefit from opportunities to play a variety of sports, spend unstructured time outdoors, explore new movement qualities, and participate in age-appropriate strength and performance training. The goal is not to add more pressure to their schedule. It is to give their bodies more variety and prepare them for the demands of the sports they love.
Parents and coaches, save this as a reminder when planning the next season, and share it with someone navigating youth sports, training, and early specialization.
